How Women Are Still Treated As Second-Class Athletes By Some Races

As I stood in line this weekend picking up my race packet for an Olympic-distance triathlon, one of my fellow athlete friends made a comment about the name of the race. “Why is it called AmeliaMan“, she asked. “Why does it have to say “man” as part of the name?” Then when a race volunteer tried to give my friend her race shirt, my triathlon buddy politely refused. “Why would I want a shirt that says “man” on it when I’m a woman?” When the shirt distributor looked at her dumbfounded, my friend then turned to the guy standing in line next to her and asked, “Would you wear a shirt that said ‘woman’ on it?’ “No”, was all he said.
