Nearly Half Of Bisexual Women Have Experienced Sexual Violence

Nearly Half Of Bisexual Women Have Experienced Sexual Violence

When we see domestic violence and rape statistics, we are almost always shown them in groups divided by gender, income, age or race. These are all important factors to look at, as they can be extremely telling about which people are being targeted more than others. However, it’s rare that people talk about sexual orientation when it comes to rape, possibly because sexual assault has so little to do with orientation (since it’s a crime of power, not sex). In the first nationwide one its kind, a study by the CDC has been released examining the links between sexuality and sexual violence. More »

Sandusky Sentence Is 30 – 60 Years; We Hope It Raises The Bar For Child Sex Abuse Prosecution

Sandusky Sentence Is 30 - 60 Years; We Hope It Raises The Bar For Child Sex Abuse Prosecution

The Jerry Sandusky sentence came this morning, and the former Penn State assistant football coach got 30 to 60 years on 45 counts of child sex abuse. At 68 years old, that’s basically a life sentence, despite his sustained denial of all “the horrible things” he’s been accused of, and frankly, we’re glad it’s so severe. Now we just hope that other child sex abuse (and sexual assault in general) will start to get similar treatment. More »

Ahead Of The Curve: University Of Montana Mandates Rape & Sexual Assault Quiz For Students

The University of Montana has been in trouble in the past year. In fact, the Federal Department of Justice launched an investigation into the school for multiple accusations of sexual assault on campus. The school obviously had to find a way to increase knowledge and awareness about the problems of sexual violence and rape. And they’ve started that process by requiring all students to watch an online video tutorial about assault and score 100% on the accompanying quiz. More »

WTF? Sexual Assault Victim Faces Jail For Tweeting Names Of Rapists

WTF? Sexual Assault Victim Faces Jail For Tweeting Names Of Rapists

Apparently protecting the name of rapists is more important than protecting the victim and other possible ones. At least that’s the case with 17-year-old Savannah Dietrich who was sexually assaulted by two teenage boys last August and now faces up to 180 days in jail for revealing the names of her attackers. It’s ridiculous, really, that anyone feels the need to protect rapists. More »

Just in case you hadn’t heard, Jerry Sandusky was found guilty of 45 of 48 charges against him on Friday evening. His crimes include 25 felonies and could land him a maximum of 442 years in jail. One can only hope that this verdict brings at least some peace and closure to the brave victims of this horrible man.

In the wake of this news, plenty are rushing to ask what’s next in the Penn State scandal. Who else will face jail time for covering up this criminals abuse and assault? How will this change coaching in college athletics? And most of all, what can be learned or gained from this horrible tragedy? More »

The Hardest Part of My Rape Recovery: The Guilt Of Not Reporting

The Hardest Part of My Rape Recovery: The Guilt Of Not Reporting

On January 16th, 2005, the Colts lost to the Patriots in the NFL play-offs. I was a freshman in college, watching the game with a girl I had met at work at her boyfriend’s house. Initially, I thought she and her boyfriend were trying to set me up with his roommate. It was just the four of us, eating a dinner of chicken and asparagus, drinking white wine. It felt very grown up to a girl who was still 18, living in a big city seven hours away from home. My friend was four years older than me, her boyfriend was older still. He and his roommate were police officers. Looking back, I remember feeling mature and happy to be included in this quiet night in to a watch a football game. The final 20-3 score is the last thing I can recall clearly about that evening. More »

Scotland Yard Launches Genius Holiday Rape Prevention Campaign

Scotland Yard Launches Genius Holiday Rape Prevention Campaign

The UK’s Scotland Yard just launched a campaign to combat high rates of drunken sexual assault during the holidays, and we think it’s genius for a couple of reasons: 1) it’s aimed at rapists, not victims, and 2) they’re using wi-fi and texting. For once, someone is setting out to remind everyone that it’s not cool to have sex with someone who’s too drunk to consent; in fact, it’s considered rape.
