Have you ever drove in a car with two screaming or just fighting/bickering kids in the backseat? Or do you have those precious angels that only read to each other and whisper secrets?

I have the type that can be pleasant one minute and down right vicious the following. It’s a surprize when this happens but it does happen. I’ve seen her throw a punch, him pinch, etc. I’ve seen the tongue sticking out, ugly faces exchanged and even the name calling. I tell you, I get sick of this from time to time. Most of the time I can ignore it, others I have to get louder than them (I’m normally a low voice girl too) and scream SHUT UP. They never hear requests of stop fighting, be nice, or I’m going to tell your dad. But that loud tone and word silences them for at least two minutes.

A New York mother apparently got sick of this too. Her two daughters, age 10 and 12 were in the backseat fighting and she finally stopped the car and ordered them out. Yes, in New York. She drove off the minute they got out, course the older one ran off after the car and got in. The younger did not, she sat there in the road and cried. A passerby saw her crying, got her an ice cream and called police. The mother, when she went to the police station to pick her daughter up was arrested for child endangerment. What do you think should happen?

bicker and bicker they will. They are going to argue to the point you want to leave your own house and let them have at it, hey at least you won’t here the arguing anymore.

Tonight, that’s exactly what happened…well minus me walking out. But I did end up separating the two.

Here’s the deal: SoccerBoy and BalletGirl love each other but closer to the end of the night they will begin to bicker, same thing with first thing in the morning. UGH, it’s enough that I may end up bald. Okay, probably not since I have SO MUCH hair, but still.

Tonight, they bickered over who was sitting where on the floor. One didn’t want the other on a certain side or something. When I stepped in and said fine sit on that side, it was as if I had just punished the other. So instead I said, “Go to your own rooms until you can get along.” About 1 minute passed and they were back out, seeing tears broke my heart. Why the tears?

“You yelled at me,” replied BalletGirl brokenheartedly.

“But why?”

::Sniff, sniff:: “We were fighting.”

“Should I have allowed it? What would you have done?” I asked calmly letting her dish out whatever.

“The same thing,” at which point she started to smile.

In the end they were fine but still. It is definitely sibling rivalry and the battle of the wills. Do you deal with this? How do you handle it?

I’ve been struggling with a heavy dose of teen-attude the last few weeks – more so than previously.

After my kids begged me to allow them to return to public school, so they could participate in the sports they love and return to the social scene they realized they loved, I agreed to let them return – but with strict rules in place.

They’ve adapted quite well to the re-entry and it seems their friends are excited to see them back. However, the return has caused a great deal of competition between two of the boys.

I didn’t realize the one boy had enjoyed his ‘alone’ time and individuality at school so much while the other two were being homeschooled. I don’t think he did either though.

Now that they other two have started back, it seems to have opened a huge can of worms where rumors are being started about one another in attempt to back mutual friends into a corner and force them to “pick a favorite” almost.

Having grown up in a home where my only sibling died after a lifelong illness and then in a house where my parents adopted a child 10 years younger, I’m not familiar with sibling rivalry and frankly it’s driving me NUTS!

I don’t find it normal – I don’t think it’s something that should be ignored and allow the kids to work it out – I think it’s rude and unacceptable and have to speak up when I see tensions growing.

Surely I’m not the only one. I must be ultra sensitive to tension – because stress of any kind in my house sends me into a depression and makes me physically ill to the point where nothing seems to work besides sleep.

I cannot imagine having 6, 8 or 18 kids – Dear God I would never survive!
