How Not to Pick Up a Girl

I am a true believer in opposites attracting. That said, sometimes common ideals work out for the best.

That’s why I found it amusing (but awesome) timing when I read today about PlanetEarthSingles.com.

I mean, there’s tons of niche sites out there, but this is one especially designed for people who are…well…tree-huggers. (I am sorry, couldn’t resist.) So, whether you are all about carbon footprints or a raw foodist, you’ll find the person for you.

I think this is potentially a really cool thing – is it any different than joining a club or taking a class to meet someone with common interests? I wonder how many sites like this exist, though…are there groups for bloggers???

Go Green Dating This Earth Day

A new online service called DatingTrail.co.uk, has been created by Richard Speigal and OriginalDating.com speed dating service creator, Andrew Summersgill. Singles are now able to use a one-stop shopping approach to access information about UK events for daters including wine tastings, speed dating, parties, singles holidays, and online dating sites.

The system is easy. You enter your postal code and a list of events and services pops up. They are listed in order of rating. Past participants use a star system to rate organizers.

We realised dating in the UK had undergone a major change over the last five years. Organised dating activities, both online and real-world events, have lost their stigma and are a genuinely successful, accepted means for normal people to find a partner. While dating online continues to grow apace, we saw a clear need for a central hub for the industry,” says Summersgill.

New Online Singles Event Service for UK

Last night, all of us lovely ladies went to Gypsy Bar (in the Borgata) for tequila tasting, and after that, clubbing at the very exclusive mur.mur – while we were there, a super mysterious tendency unveiled itself.

One of us, married for fifteen years, was absolutely FLOODED with male attention. Another, in a serious relationship, was too receiving declarations of love.

Us single girls? Interestingly enough, we were the ones either talking to OTHER girls, sipping our vodka-sodas, or staring at our phones to see if some unseen-other boy would call.

What lesson can we all learn from this experience? Men are beasts. They are attracted not to what is available, but to who seems uninterested, happy, and not to be paying attention to them. My married friend told me she actually never calls her husband when she’s away on trips – and it keeps their relationship “mysterious and sexy”. Why then must us single girls call/email/text our interests nonstop? And then be depressed when/if they don’t answer?

Lets learn from those who succeeded. Men do not like what is in front of them. They want to chase, and capture. Let them chase you – and you will finally (maybe) get caught.

Or I can be totally wrong. I’m the one sleeping alone in a giant gorgeous hotel room. Sigh.

The Thrill of the Hunt

I read an article tonight that talked about Dr. Marco van Gelderen, a senior lecturer in the Department of Management and International Business, at Albany, who has done extensive research into the subject of dating as a service industry.

Dr. van Gelderen says the dating service industry has grown in recent years as a result of greater demand and rapidly evolving technology including the internet. But too many potential clients remain stuck in “singledom” because of a lack of industry awareness of their needs as well as ambivalence about using dating services.

“The dating industry has a number of special problems in being successful in connecting people,” says Dr van Gelderen. “First, people don’t like to admit that they are lonely. Loneliness is something that happens to other people.

“There is a social stigma to loneliness and even to being alone. There is also the perception that dating services are for losers.”

He interviewed many singles asking them questions about what factors affect attraction and dating. He wanted input that would help to create new ideas in the dating service industry. Some of the ideas that the Dr came up with include a combination dating and weight loss facility, blind-folded speed dating, and chatting about mundane, but commonly used products as a way to start conversation.

Okay, some of these ideas are interesting, but they sound a bit crazy to me. Weight loss and dating? I know that people of all sizes are looking for love, but weight loss takes time and lots of effort and meeting someone new works best in a relaxed environment. Those two things- weight loss and romance- might not be mutually beneficial. Don’t you want to date someone when you are feeling confident and secure with who you are, where you are, what you are?

Blind-folded speed dating sounds like a reality show game. Did you ever see the episode of Survivor All Stars where they were doing a blind-folded game with big puzzle pieces or something like that? What a (comical) mess. People falling, people hitting their heads, people shouting. It was nuts. Does that sound like what you are looking for in a first meeting? Does that scene carry even a hint of romance?

I think that it’s good that there is an open dialogue within the industry, but I’m not sure they are heading in the right direction. How about meeting people through volunteering for a worthy cause? Or…. cooking classes for singles? (Wait, I might have mentioned that one before). Just because it’s a new idea, that does not mean that it’s a good idea.

Blindfolded Speed Dating – Good or Bad Idea?

In case you guys didn’t know, 2008 is the Year of the Rat.

What she said was that this year is the year that women will most likely marry younger men or, at least, be attracted to them. So, I’m guessing they’re referring to single ladies who haven’t really considered the ‘younger market’.

I reckon this is good news then, yeah? More options, more prospects. I guess you ladies should give them younger men a shot a second look. They’re ripe for the picking. Hehe.

In the poll, people were asked which male and female star they would most like to date. Contactmusic.com reports that women picked Clooney as their dream choice and men wanted Jessica Alba.

While actor Matthew McConaughey, rapper Kanye West and pop star Ricky Martin made it to the male list, former “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston, singer Queen Latifah and Jessica Simpson featured on the female list.

George Clooney and Jessica Alba top singles dating poll

This is a tribute to the nice guys. The nice guys that finish last, that never become more than friends, that endure hours of whining and bitching about what a$sholes guys are, while disproving the very point. This is dedicated to those guys who always provide a shoulder to lean on but restrain themselves to tentative hugs, those guys who hold open doors and give reassuring pats on the back and sit patiently outside the changing room at department stores. This is in honor of the guys that obligingly reiterate how cute/beautiful/smart/funny/sexy their female friends are at the appropriate moment, because they know most girls need that litany of support. This is in honor of the guys with open minds, with laid-back attitudes, with honest concern. This is in honor of the guys who respect a girl’s every facet, from her privacy to her theology to her clothing style.

Ode to the Nice Guys (A rant written for the Wharton Undergraduate Journal)

It’s a bit of a read but it sure is worth it. Fun, interesting and definitely entertainingly informative. LOL.
