Can’t We All Just Do Oatmeal Masks?: Kim Kardashian Gets A Blood Facial (It’s As Terrifying As It Sounds)

Can't We All Just Do Oatmeal Masks?: Kim Kardashian Gets A Blood Facial (It's As Terrifying As It Sounds)

Whatever happened to those regular ol’ facials in which an esthetician exfoliates your skin, applies a nice, thick mask of something green and then massages your face? If you were feeling extra fun, you could get some kind of seasonal mask like pumpkin or strawberry. But…no. Gone are those days, my friends. In with the “terrifyingly painful” and out with the “pleasant and relaxing and completely rational.” More »

Beauty Counters Aren’t Blissful: Do You Have Skincare Shopping Angst?

Beauty Counters Aren't Blissful: Do You Have Skincare Shopping Angst?

I have a (perhaps unhealthy) fascination with beauty products — partially because a new skin condition crops up on my face at nearly every change of the seasons, and partially because I was just born asking to go to the Clinique counter. It’s not learned behavior; my mother is happy to slather whatever brand of moisturizer she finds on sale at Costco. But the tiny, shiny bottles and vials and jars that welcome all department store shoppers have always been my favorite part of the mall, and my greatest moment of childhood shopping satisfaction was the time my mother bought me my first set of non-drugstore brand soap, toner, and lotion. Beauty Takes a Beating: 5 Ways You Harm Your Skin Every Day

Beauty Takes a Beating: 5 Ways You Harm Your Skin Every Day

Our skin takes work – not to mention a good chunk of our salary. We cleanse, tone, exfoliate, apply sunscreen, and moisturize every day. (And do a facial mask while we watch Weeds.) But it turns out that this normal, everyday routine could be harming our skin. Check out Marie Claire‘s list of five ways we could be damaging our outermost layer, courtesy of Lemondrop.

1. Old glasses prescriptions. If the RX on your glasses or contacts is old, you’re probably squinting a lot more than you realize. That means you’re leading yourself down the path to fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes. Head to the eye doc and get your prescription updated — it’s an excuse to buy some new glasses, too.

3. High-impact exercise. Running causes your fat pads to slide, which deconstructs elastin and collagen. Try alternating sprints with power-walking — or else you may soon be living in Sag City, sweetheart. More »
