Women More at Risk When Smoking Tobacco

Women who light up may have an increased susceptibility to tobacco carcinogens.

A new study from Swiss researchers shows that women are more vulnerable than men to the cancer-causing effects of smoking tobacco.
The study results were reported this week at the European Multidisciplinary Conference in Thoracic Oncology in Lugano, Switzerland.
The researchers studied 683 lung cancer patients referred to a cancer center between 2000 and 2005.
They found that women tended to be younger when they developed the cancer, even though they smoked on average significantly less than men.

Pot/tobacco combo and serious lung risks

If you smoke both marijuana and tobacco, you’re at an even higher risk of developing a serious lung disease, say researchers.
According to a study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal last week, people who regularly smoked both tobacco and marijuana were about three times more likely than non-smokers to develop a COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), a serious lung disease. The authors wrote:

During the 1890’s Victorian doctor Thomas Allinsin had some very controversial essays on healthy living published. I believe his opinions would still be called controversial today (or perhaps there is a better word out there – feel free to suggest some).
