I don’t have much experience with guinea pigs: We actually never had them at the pet store I worked at so the extent of my time spent with them has really only been watching them when we go to the store to pick up supplies!

The video above of Pooh Bear actually taught me several things about guinea pigs in less than a minute!

First of all, they’re really darn cute; secondly, the cute noise that Pooh Bear is making is called “wheeking,” and is generally the sound made when the pig is asking for food. Guinea pigs have many other sounds as well, with names such as chut, chubble, shrieking, purring and rumble, and they all have their own special meanings.

Lastly, I learned that guinea pigs apparently have really good hearing! Pooh Bear started making his cute squeaking noises as soon as he heard and realized that his owner was preparing his meal of vegetables in the adjacent kitchen.

Do you have guinea pigs? What are your favorite guinea pig quirks?

Sit quietly in your house and listen…just listen. What does it sound like? What noises are there? Perhaps Fireworks?
Now, really listen. Is there a washing machine or dryer running? Is there a dishwasher running too? What about a phone ringing in the background or even next door? Think about all of the things that your child will be hearing for the very first time.

Now, really listen. Is there a washing machine or dryer running? Is there a dishwasher running too? What about a phone ringing in the background or even next door? Think about all of the things that your child will be hearing for the very first time.

AJ had NEVER heard any of those things and was very scared of all of them, except the phone…Eric taught him to talk to President Bush while we were on the airplane. Why he couldn’t have him talk to a Democrat I’ll never know.

One of the worst things in our house was the vacuum and I could not vacuum the house while AJ was home for almost a year. Only after my Mother in Law purchased him a toy vacuum for Christmas did he start to see that it was not going to hurt him. And even then I had to either vacuum with him in a sling or with him sitting in his crib, one of the only places he felt truly safe.

Question: What sounds do you foresee your child fearing or what sounds were frightening to your child?
