Most people know that caterpillars become butterflies, but unless you’re studying biology, you probably don’t know much more than that. If the only thing you can think of is “cocoon,” you should check out Deepak Chopra‘s version of the story: This week, on his show, “Rabbit Hole,” Deepak explains how something called ‘imaginal cells’ are responsible for the metamorphosis from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. Remember how I wanted to learn how to meditate? I’m still working on that. It’s not easy, especially since I’m kind of tightly-wound. As part of my attempts, the folks at Seattle Insight Meditation kindly let me drop in on their Introduction to Meditation class last night to give it a try. The class gave me a lot to think about–mostly about mindfulness and being present–but for a true beginner (like me), there were a few things that might have been helpful to have in mind before going in. The Huffington Post‘s Oasis, a yoga and massage center they set up at the Republican National Convention (RNC), was designed to be a peaceful space for stressed-out delegates to “unplug and recharge.”  However, for Seane Corn, co-founder of Off the Mat, Into the World®, a nonprofit that uses yoga to inspire and educate, the experience sounds less than zen. Before bath salts and Breaking Bad, there were plant-based hallucinogens, and they weren’t used as a cure for boredom: Many of them were (and still are) used to achieve a natural high in the pursuit of religion. More
Through her new book, Yoga Cures, celebrity yoga teacher, Tara Stiles, wants everyone to know that yoga is not just about spirituality. Rather, it’s about functionality too. Specifically, it can help cure the body of many of our top ailments, including hangovers, the flu, arthritis, depression and even wrinkles. And Tara’s not afraid of her critics when she says that we shouldn’t rely on a guru to teach us these things. Instead, she wants us to learn how to tap into the power we all have inside to change and heal our own bodies. “When we tap in, get quiet and listen, anything is possible,” she says. More
Has anyone else been watching Oprah‘s Lifeclass? I have to admit, when I first heard about her new show on OWN, I was skeptical. Like, why is she re-hashing her old shows? Why is she holding on to the past and not moving forward? But then, for lack of nothing better on TV lately, I tuned in and learned how wrong I was. She is in the process of teaching me some really valuable life lessons about emotions and spirituality and overall well-being. I especially liked what she said last night. More
HBO recently picked up the Mike White/Laura Dern show, “Enlightened,” about a stressed-out corporate exec who has a mental breakdown, goes to a treatment center, and comes back, well… enlightened. The trailer featured vignettes of Dern telling people (or herself) that she’s determined to be an “agent of change,” and repeating mantras more likely to be found in a yoga class than on HBO (lines like “you can wake up to your higher self…the world is full of possibility…you can really live”). And in fact, some yoga teachers will definitely be inspired by the show, given HBO’s deal with Crunch Fitness to launch a nationally branded “Enlightened Yoga” program in conjunction with the series. For whatever reason, some people continue to think that yoga is a religion or is a threat to certain religious beliefs. I have taken great interest in following these debates (with some groups even calling yoga “bizarre” and saying that “Christians are not called upon to empty the mind or see the human body as a means of connecting to the divine”) and as someone who was raised Catholic and now practices yoga regularly, all of this seems ridiculous to me. Yes, yoga can be a pretty spiritual practice, or not. It’s up to the yogi and the experience she wants to get out of it. For me personally, it has gone above and beyond any church, religion or set of beliefs that I have subscribed to. More

Next to maybe Oprah, Kirstie Alley is one of the most notorious yo-yo dieters of the generation. For years, the one-time Cheers bombshell (and Golden Globe and Emmy winner) has been shilling various diet products and systems (remember when she was doing Jenny Craig?), and being extremely public about her struggles with weight. And every time she gains or loses in the triple digits, everyone wants to know: how does she do it? More
Calling yoga a source for spiritual enlightenment can be a stretch for some—literally. In her new book, Yoga Bitch: One Woman’s Quest to Conquer Skepticism, Cynicism, and Cigarettes on the Path to Enlightenment, Suzanne Morrison writes about something many yogis have struggled with: total ambivalence about the often-narcissistic, sometimes-spiritual yoga world. Morrison says it’s easy to get caught up in the complexities of all that, and wanted to share her experience as a modern American yogi who says the more she tried to find her higher self, the more she found her lower self. Two New York yogis seemed to reignite the ongoing debate over what yoga truly is and whether we should refrain from commercializing what should be a spiritual endeavor, in a public display on the city’s subway system last week. From … More
According to a new study, the number of women attending church is declining quickly. In the last two decades, the percentage has decreased by 11 points to 44% as reported from the Barna Group. Sunday school, volunteering at church and reading the Bible has also diminished. More than half of all women used to read the Bible when not in church, now only 40% reportedly do. There has also been a 17% increase in in the number of women who now claim to be “unchurched.” More
I think we all know your average Western yoga class isn’t exactly a paragon of ancient Yogic philosophy, but most are still laced with a little spirituality—your odd ‘Om’ here and there, a Buddha statue in the back corner, a nod or two to the Universe. More
