(Misleading) Study: Milk Is Better Than Water For Hydrating Kids

The headline “Milk Better Than Water to Rehydrate Kids, Study Finds” rolled through my RSS feed yesterday (courtesy of ScienceDaily, the holy grail of health studies, if you’re ever looking for one). It immediately sounded off alarm bells. First off, I’m always skeptical of anyone telling me that something is more hydrating than water. Sure, marathon runners and elite athletes are better off hydrating with a sports drink that replaces the electrolytes they’re sweating out, but for most of us mortals? We’re better off drinking water than some $3 mix of sugar, food coloring, and salt. But even if milk is a step up from sugary drinks (which, by the way, not everyone would say it is), should we really be filling up our kids’ water bottles with milk? Researchers from McMaster University seem to think so, but I have a few issues with their study. More »

Aggressive marketing and buff stars like Madonna have made coconut popular recent years; hooking a health-conscious crowd with claims of being nature’s sports drink. But according to the Los Angeles Times, coconut water isn’t all it’s cracked up to be — it doesn’t provide post-workout protein, it doesn’t contain enough carbs for athletes involved in “intensive training,” and while it contains tons of potassium, it doesn’t contain much salt. Oh, and according to the director of sports nutrition at UC Davis, “there’s nothing magical about coconut water.” We can’t say whether coconut water is really worth your money, but we think the Times could stand to ease up on the drink: For the average person, we still think it’s a better post-workout choice than sports drinks and energy bars.
