Gym Classy Lady: The Time I Tried Adult Sports Leagues (Or, How I Met My Future Husband)

Gym Classy Lady: The Time I Tried Adult Sports Leagues (Or, How I Met My Future Husband)

Ahh, Valentine’s Day, the licorice of holidays. Everyone either loves or hates this day. And while I don’t really have an opinion either way, I’m in favor of any holiday that gives me an excuse to eat more candy and give punny cards (seriously: “I choo choo choose you,” what’s not to love about that?) so I guess I fall on the love side. And I’m kind of OK with that. More »

Video: Lindsey Vonn Crashes At World Championships, Gets Airlifted To Hospital For Knee Injury

On opening day of the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Championships today, Lindsey Vonn was airlifted to a hospital after a terrible crash in the women’s super-G. The U.S. Ski Team member was lifted off the course by helicopter, screaming in pain due to a severe knee injury, involving torn ligaments (ACL and MCL) and a broken bone in her lower right leg. She’s expected to receive surgery for the injuries, but it’s unclear whether she’ll be able to recover in time to train for the 2014 Olympics. More »

Why I Love Football…Despite My Worries About Football Injuries And Violence

Why I Love Football...Despite My Worries About Football Injuries And Violence

The Super Bowl is approaching, and, despite a tragic shortage of chicken wings, fans are rallying around the biggest day for the game they love. And while I’m excited, because I’m a football fan to my core, I’m also conflicted–and not just because my team didn’t make it. I’m conflicted because, between hoaxy girlfriends, the never-ending push to play with an injury, the brain damage, and the legacy of sexism, violence, and abuse, there are about a million reasons why football, as a professional sport and as an institution of higher education, should be decried by feminists, parents, concerned citizens, and generally moral human beings. Watch A Novice Try Capoeira, Get Inspired To Try New Sports In 2013

If you resolved to try a new sport this year, you need to watch Jamie Petitto‘s new video about learning Capoeira. It’s easy to get paralyzed by gym jitters and anxiety when you’re trying something new for the first time–especially something physical like sports and workout classes. Which is why we love Jamie’s series, “See Gurl Try.” This week, she tested out Capoeira; if she can do Brazilian martial arts, you can keep your promise to try something new, too. More »

Fox News Reports That Kids' Yoga Proves The Trend That Is The Wussification Of America

It’s the first week of the year, and everyone’s reporting on trends of the past, present and future now that we’re in the year 2013. Yesterday, ABC News reported that “more yoga practitioners are pint-sized,” explaining that it’s the “fastest-growing sport in America”–especially amongst kids. Fox News was perturbed. In their humble opinion, teaching kids yoga is contributing to the real trend of 2013: “The wussification of America.” More »

Former WNBA Star Chamique Holdsclaw Arrested For Shooting At Ex-Girlfriend

More domestic violence in sports, this time involving former WNBA and University of Tennessee basketball star Chamique Holdsclaw. Sam Gordon, 9-Year-Old Girl, Is New Star Running Back In Boys Football League

The Gremlin League–a boys’ football league in Salt Lake City–has an impressive new star running back: a nine-year-old girl named Sam Gordon. Many are calling her the new internet sports sensation, partially thanks to a youtube video that outlines her 2012 season highlights (35 scores, 232 carries, 1,911 yards, 8.2 yards per carry, and 65 tackles), and features lots of great footage of the tiny player kicking ass on the field. Lolo Jones Proves She’s More Than A Pretty Face, Joins The US Bobsled Team

Lolo Jones Proves She's More Than A Pretty Face, Joins The US Bobsled Team

Remember all that hullabaloo about how Olympian Lolo Jones was only getting attention because she was pretty, and not because she was a good athlete? We all knew it was bogus–she came in fourth at the London games, and will definitely compete again in 2016. But now, the hurdler has added another reason to respect her skills: She’s joined the U.S. women’s bobsled team. More »

Football, I Love You, But This Sexist, Fat-Shaming Sign Makes Me Embarrassed To Be A Fan

Football, I Love You, But This Sexist, Fat-Shaming Sign Makes Me Embarrassed To Be A Fan

Because I was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon, and because the woo-woo liberal arts college I attended didn’t have a football team, the Oregon Ducks are my preferred college football team. But at their game against the University of Washington Huskies on Saturday night, I was pretty embarrassed by my fellow sports fan, when this sign was shown for a split-second on national TV. More »

Erin DiMeglio Becomes Florida’s Star 1st Female Quarterback; Media Confused About Her Gender

Erin DiMeglio Becomes Florida's Star 1st Female Quarterback; Media Confused About Her Gender

Erin DiMeglio is Florida’s first female quarterback, and she’s getting a very warm reception as she starts her season with South Plantation High School. Hard-working, hopeful, and humble, DiMeglio is pretty much the ultimate player; teammates, classmates, fans and family are all cheering for her with gusto. Meanwhile, her pretty face, long blonde ponytail (expertly thrown back into a ponytail by a cheerleader at the bleachers) and sweet personality seem made for tv; it’s no surprise that she’s also becoming a media darling–even beyond the sports section. There’s nothing not to love about her story, and yet…the media still seem to be more hung up on her gender than her sportsmanship. More »

Christine Brennan Says Sexist Sports Coverage Is Part Of The Game, As Long As It’s Male-Dominated

Christine Brennan Says Sexist Sports Coverage Is Part Of The Game, As Long As It's Male-Dominated

In a recent interview with Howard Kurtz on CNN’s Reliable Sources, Christine Brennan gave her two cents on how female athletes were covered in this year’s Olympics, as well as the much-debated New York Times article on Lolo Jones released last week. As one of few popular female sports writers, it’s somewhat surprising that Brennan defended the Times piece, but she made a good case. What far more disappointing was her failure to really call out the media’s problem with women athletes: Rather than making a real call for change, she seemed to simply pass off sexist sports coverage as part of the game, however disappointing it may be. Kinesio Tape: Olympics Fashion Statement, Or Performance-Enhancer?

Kinesio Tape: Olympics Fashion Statement, Or Performance-Enhancer?

Kinesiology tape (or kinesio tape) has been spotted on many an Olympian at London this year–the most notable example has probably been German volleyball player Katrin Holtwick‘s blue tape arrangement over her torso. Although varying kinds of tape have been used in sports for a long time (think: ankle wraps and taped-up foot sprains), the fluorescent colors and odd placement on athletes’ bodies are new, and have been getting it a lot of attention this year. Which is making a lot of people wonder: Is the blue tape a fashion statement, or is it helping athletes perform? More »
