Ready for some Sunday afternoon humor? As I said last week, the Internet is positively stuffed with amazing stock photos. From the painfully poorly-acted to weird graphics involving a dragon attacking a woman from an Easter egg, there are tons of options for almost anything you could possibly be looking for (including things I’m not sure anybody is ever, every going to be looking for).
This week, the category of stock photos we have brought you to giggle at is “single women.” Angry European nuns, miserable lonely ladies and a whole lot of hungry females are all apparently representative of what a relationship-free woman looks like. More
Since today is the holiday that it is and there are lots of adorable articles going around, I figured I would show you a few of the strange things that cropped up when I searched for Easter stock photos. Some are slightly peculiar, others are straight-up creepy — all are hilarious.

Earlier today, I wrote this post about women and smoking and HOO BOY did I laugh and shake my head in disbelief when I searched stock photos for the search term “women smoking.” I wasn’t surprised; stock photo sites are notorious for their often sexist and just plain strange depictions of women (see also: pregnant women smoking and “woman at bar.”) Still, you’ve got to click through for some of the crazy-ass images that come up on THE FIRST PAGE of search results for “women smoking.” From scantily-clad vampires to faux Goth warriors and quite a few pictures I can’t even connect to smoking AT ALL (I’m looking at you, creepy priestess), Shutterstock has inadvertently created an anti-smoking PSA. Across the board, stock photos are largely weird and quite often sexist. Every so often in searching for a particular type of image, we come across representations of women so weird, so sexist and just so silly that they make us either howl out loud with laughter and/or cry out in disgust (often both at once). There are your pregnant women smoking. Your hourglasses-over-the-uterus fertility photos. There’s the infamous women laughing alone with salads. When I say the word “fertility” to you, what comes to mind? I’ll give you a few moments …. Okay. So you thought of dead shrubs, toy babies in test tubes, women clutching alarm clocks to their vaginas and syringes full of baby bibs, right? No? Yesterday I wrote about Nancy Upton, whose photo entries for American Apparel’s plus-size model search satirized the idea that bigger women only eat junk food, can’t control their eating, etc. Later that day, I found myself searching for stock photos of women and cheeseburgers (to illustrate a post on the brain’s response to images of fatty food) and what immediately struck me was how well these photos seemed to illustrate Upton’s point—i.e., how different said cheeseburger photos were based on the body size and relative attractiveness of the woman pictured (attractiveness of the cheeseburger did not seem to matter).
