“Nanny, is it time to sign up for the library program, ” my grandchildren would ask as June approached. 

This was a fun time, a magical time for them when our local library, the Pease Public Library of Plymouth, NH planned weekly programs and rewards for meeting book reading goals.  It was a fun time for me, too.  Even after the children were old enough to attend by themselves, I enjoyed the quiet of reading and writing at the library while they were occupied by summer reading projects.

Check with your local library.  What programs do they have for youngsters to encourage summer reading and having fun?

Many times there is a summer theme for the programs and reading the libraries plan.  They also might invite outside entertainers and authors for weekly programs.

There have been folk singers, magicians, animals from the local nature center, graphic book artist, puppet show, and children’s authors and poets.  Occasionally there are field trips. Crafts are adapted to fit the summer theme.

Visit your local library and see what they have available for young readers.
