There’s a Wikipedia entry for medical tattoos , and there are discussions about them on various blogs and sites, like Diabetes Advocacy and The Diabetic Lifestyle Journal.

I’ve heard of getting each other’s names tattooed on the ring finger or there’s the old stand-by, a beloveds name, but how about something more original?
I saw this thread wherein someone known as “sassmouth,” suggests a slice of bread next to a jar of peanut butter on one person, a slice of bread and a jar of jelly on the other. The logic behind this is something along the lines of PB&J goes togetherand everybody loves a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Oh-kay.

What do you think about the idea of couples getting matching or symbolic couple’s tattoos?

I’ve heard of getting each other’s names tattooed on the ring finger or there’s the old stand-by, a beloveds name, but how about something more original?

I saw this thread wherein someone known as “sassmouth,” suggests a slice of bread next to a jar of peanut butter on one person, a slice of bread and a jar of jelly on the other. The logic behind this is something along the lines of PB&J goes togetherand everybody loves a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Oh-kay.

My friend, Eliza, suggested Celtic knots, which is something that I think could be a very good idea – if you like Celtic knots (I do).

Couple’s tattoos have the potential to be a big, big mistake. If you are still set on the idea, here are a few things I think you should think about:

*Avoid the Name Tattoo, please. If you have to have it, make sure that it’s not too big or ornate to cover at a later date, just in case. Sure we want you and your loved one to last forever, but sometimes that’s not the case.

*Avoid getting a tattoo that is only half a picture for the same reason. Walking around with one half of a heart for the rest of your life would be very sad.

*Do pick something that means something to you – an image that you would want to wear even if you were picking something that was meant for you alone. Be creative with the couple symbolism.

*Just like with any tattoo, take your time and look at a lot of different images. There are many different styles out there, pick a keeper.

*Keep in mind that colors can fade. For example I now wear a color-less sun tattoo on my ankle. I’m okay with it, in fact when I originally picked it out, I meant for it to be colorless and only agreed to color after my sister talked me into it. Pretty funny how the sun and time have worked together to give me what I wanted in the first place.

Are you one half of a couple’s tattoo? If so, please tell us about it.

I’m on Day 6 with the kiddos. Things have been going very well, but I’m ready for Kerri to get back in so many ways. (Get your mind out of the gutter.) I’m not really expecting her until bedtime; she and her girlfriend had no reason to hit the road early that morning. So when the phone rings late that afternoon I figure they’re about halfway home. And I’m pretty much right… except that they want to make a pit stop on the way home. “Um,” she [...]
Post from: Blisstree

She invited me to share my side of the story, so here it goes.

“Um,” she says, “can you call the tattoo parlor and see how late they’re open tonight?”

I froze.

Now, as Kerri said, it isn’t that I had an issue with her getting a tattoo. I’ve heard her talk about it for years, and I’m fine with it. It ain’t my body or my pain, right? I just couldn’t deal with it at that moment. The fact that they were in the middle of nowhere on the interstate and her calls kept dropping didn’t help. I wound up leaving her a message saying I can’t cope with this now. She was crushed. This was something she’d been wanting, she was so excited, and I wasn’t.

Rewind: A year or two ago I needed new glasses. My old ones had broken, and after several weeks of putting it off I finally renewed my prescription and accepted the fact I had to go shopping. I hate shopping. I’m also cheap, so I went looking at Sam’s Club. I started browsing through the optical department, and the kids started talking and climbing and fighting and asking questions and giving me their opinions and… and… and…

Yep. I froze. It was just too much for me to handle. We walked away from the optical department, I caught my breath, and a few minutes later I went back by myself to give it another go. (I wound up picking one’s from the kid’s section; I have a narrow head.)

Fast forward back to the tattoo: An hour or so later, Kerri calls back completely crushed and desperate to know what’s wrong. “Remember when I was shopping for my glasses, and I completely froze?” I asked. “I had the same feeling and reaction.” Ah… now she understood. Eventually we worked through everything, and I was even able to suggest she call a friend who might be able to help her out.

And now I’m married to a woman with a tattoo.
