This Year, I’m Going To Stop Lying To My Therapist

This Year, I'm Going To Stop Lying To My Therapist

For the first time in my non-collegiate adult life, I recently got health care. The first thing I did was book an appointment with a therapist. The second thing I did was request my college medical records, to confirm my timeline of medication and what my dosages were. But they included more information than I’d expected. Like notes from the doctor, which reminded me that when I was 20 years old and seeking medical help and drug therapy for my mental illness (I’m bipolar), I was also lying through my teeth. More »

Lady Gaga To Offer Free Counseling Services For Fans On Born This Way Ball Tour

Present-day pop’s number one star Lady Gaga has been in the news throughout 2012 for her honesty regarding mental issues, eating disorders and body image. The tabloids have body snarked her and criticized her weight gain (which was actually not all that much, anyway, but that’s beside the fact), garnering her to respond in a public, positive manner, earning countless fans’ admiration, as well as our own. Now, it has just been announced that her Born This Way tour will be setting the stage (so to speak) for even more discussion regarding mental health! More »

A Newtown News Story That Actually Makes Us Smile: Comfort Dogs

A Newtown News Story That Actually Makes Us Smile: Comfort Dogs

There isn’t a whole lot of good news coming out of Connecticut since the Sandy Hook school shootings last friday, but a new story about comfort dogs in Newtown is surprisingly uplifting. The dogs (also called therapy dogs) were brought from Illinois to brighten the mood and provide some joy, especially for the kids who survived Friday’s events. And the kids’ reactions will make your heart melt. More »

Study Says Talk Therapy Eases Depression. Isn’t That Kind Of The Idea?

Study Says Talk Therapy Eases Depression. Isn't That Kind Of The Idea?

A new study confirms that the decades-long practice of talk therapy does, in fact, ease depression. But what at first seems like a pretty obvious research finding is surprisingly revealing: The premise of the study isn’t just to ask “does therapy work?”–it’s mostly to uncover the best cure for depression is for people who don’t respond to antidepressants. My Therapist Is Pregnant, And I Hate Her For It

My Therapist Is Pregnant, And I Hate Her For It

When I showed up to my session, my therapist told me we needed to discuss something. Uh oh—had a check bounced? Was she breaking up with me? I’d been thinking it was time to end our sessions; maybe she was trying to beat me to the punch. But no. Those were not the issues at hand. She was pregnant, and wouldn’t be able to hide it much longer, so she was letting all of her patients know. She’s due at the end of June and plans to be on maternity leave for two to three months, but would be available for phone sessions. More »

My Therapist Is A Quack, But I Love Her Anyway

My Therapist Is A Quack, But I Love Her Anyway

I love my therapist. I really do. In fact, I love her so much that at the end of my sessions I want to leap up from the couch, hug her and never let her go. But I don’t, because I’m assuming that might be pushing it. Although since I don’t know for sure, I may try it sometime. But recently, a friend who has his PhD in clinical psychology warned me: It’s not always in the best interest of the patient to love their therapist. In fact, he thinks my therapist is a quack. More »

This Christmas, Give Yourself The Gift Of A Good Therapist

This Christmas, Give Yourself The Gift Of A Good Therapist

I believe every one of us should go to to mental therapy at some point in our lives. And it has nothing to do with the fact that 20% of us are on anti-depressants or some other form of mental health drug. (OK, maybe it does a little.) But the fact is, we all have problems. We all have baggage. And we could all use someone to periodically tell us that we are “normal”. Especially this time of year. More »

Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills To Air Russell And Taylor Armstrong’s Therapy Sessions

Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills To Air Russell And Taylor Armstrong's Therapy Sessions

The following is a post from our sister site Crushable

So, this is not good. Perhaps in an effort to show that the Armstrong marriage had problems pre-dating their appearance on reality TV, The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills has decided to air footage from Russell and Taylor Armstrong’s marriage counseling sessions. An anonymous tipster told RadarOnline as much:

“Bravo has done major editing of the show, to be sensitive to the fact that Russell killed himself. However the decision was made to air the footage of the therapy sessions,” a Bravo insider tells RadarOnline.com. “Viewers will see the two of them with their marriage counselor, Dr. Charles Sophy, as well as individual sessions with Taylor. Russell’s one-on-one sessions will not air. Taylor is completely supportive of the decision, and thinks it will help battered women to make the decision to leave an abusive relationship, just like she did,” the insider says.

What, they’re not going to air the one-on-one therapy sessions of a guy who ended up killing himself? How very magnanimous of them. But wouldn’t it be even more magnanimous if they didn’t air any of his therapy sessions at all? More »

Ms. Monogamy: Yes You’re Depressed, But You Can Still Be A Good Spouse

Ms. Monogamy: Yes You're Depressed, But You Can Still Be A Good Spouse

You know that commercial for that anti-depressant that says, “Depression hurts…” then cuts to the dog with a leash in its mouth, looking all sad because it hasn’t been walked in who-knows-how-long? The voice-over completes the sentence with: “Everyone.” Well, I’ve been thinking about that commercial a bunch lately. It is, for better or worse, so very true. So while you’re down in the depths of your depression, where it’s hard just to think of brushing your teeth, I’m asking you to think about your partner. More »

Vacation As Therapy: Leading Ladies Of Hollywood Who Hit The Road To Escape

Vacation As Therapy: Leading Ladies Of Hollywood Who Hit The Road To Escape

In 2010, Dutch researchers found that the simple act of planning a vacation gave subjects a huge boost in pre-trip happiness, and a very relaxing vacation could boost happiness for up to eight weeks. Of course, most of us know this already from our own experience of handing in that vacation request and packing our bags for an exotic (or at least faraway) locale; when you have a case of the blues — or you’re just stuck in a rut — a vacation can be the best therapy there is. 10 Steps to Lasting Health and Happiness From a Medical Expert

At Blisstree, we’re all about trying to get happier and healthier in order to live better, and we hope to help you do the same every day. But, of course, it’s not always easy to know how to make that intangible dream of happiness a reality. And even if you do know how to do it, it’s pretty challenging to keep all the parts of your life in balance so that often-elusive health and happiness last as long as possible. So I asked M.D., board-certified psychiatrist, and Blisstree contributor Dale Archer to give us ten steps we can take to promote and achieve lasting happiness in our own lives (and these are tactics he actually shares with his patients). So what are we waiting for? Let’s get happy — and healthy.
