The golf world is abuzz about The Knee (Knee pain bring Tiger Woods down for the season). Commentators and sports enthusiasts are wondering if the latest news about Woods’ knee injury and upcoming surgery will mean the end to his incredible golf career. For the most part though, the comments have been fairly positive.
Apparently, Woods not only has a problem with his ACL (Do you have knee pain from a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)?), he now has stress fractures - breaks in a bone that are caused by overuse - that need to heal.
Knee injuries can come on suddenly or they can build up over time. While golf may not seem - to a non-golfer - to be stressful to the body, the forces required for a good swing can be very hard on the knees, as well as other joints.
In Woods’ case, the fear of arthritis is a real possibility. The overuse of the knee, the three surgeries within five years, are both risk factors for developing arthritis.

If a torn ACL is your problem, there’s good news if you’re a baby boomer.
A small study at the Mayo Clinic found that 83% of baby-boomer patients (out of 34) who had surgery for a torn ACL returned to normal or near normal activities. The patients were followed for two years.
