I saw this a couple weeks ago on the list of the 50 Greatest Travel Gadgets of 2008 at Vagabondish and I just had to talk about it. Introducing the Treetent …

Vagabondish called it “no doubt the most expensive and useless camping devise ever created” and I must agree. This is a 13-foot tall tent that hangs in a tree and comes with a price tag of $50,000.

Inside the tent, you will find a 9-foot diameter hardwood floor and a mattress that apparently sleeps two comfortably. It was created by Dutch sculptor and designer Dré Wapenaar, who Neiman Marcus says has “earned international fame for making the world’s coolest architectural tents.” Umm … I wouldn’t exactly call it cool. Stupid and ridiculous? Maybe.

If you love the Treetent and want to know more about it, visit NeimanMarcus.com or call 1.877.9NM.GIFT.

Check out the rest of the list of the greatest travel gadgets at Vagabondish. They have some really cool stuff (and some other wacky finds).

When you can’t get together with family and friends during the holidays, you’ve got to pick up the phone and give everyone a call. It’s the season when, as Hallmark would say, we want to reach out and touch someone.

There’s an easy way to call everyone on your contact list without stretching your budget for long distance to the breaking point. It’s called the magicJack, and it’s a computer gadget that has a USB drive on one side and a phone jack on the other. You plugs your household phone into the phone jack on the device and then plug into a USB port. Then pick up the phone and make your call. You can make calls using a regular phone or a headset.

Not only is this handy at home to make calls, but you can tuck this little gem in with your laptop and use it on the road. It works anywhere you have a broadband connection, and since it’s only the size of a matchbox, it won’t take up precious room.

With this service you can phone FREE to the US and Canada, as well as call free back home to your magicJack number. Free voice mail, caller ID, 911 emergency service and FollowMe, a call forwarding service, and a few other services. International calls are very reasonable priced – for example, calls to France are currently two cents/minute.

magicJack is a great cost saver, allowing you the shave a few dollars off your long distance bill, cut down on cell phone minutes (and dropped calls) and avoid costly calls from hotel rooms.

The magicJack comes with the device, phone number and year of service, and one lucky Travel Product Guide reader is going to win this package. To be eligible to win, just leave a comment answering this question:

Who are you going to call?

The contest runs through tonight, Saturday, December 13th, 2008 at 11:59pm (PT). On Sunday, a random winner will be selected from all the comments to receive the magicJack and year of service. Please enter only once, and leave your email address in the appropriate spot so that we can contact you.

Check back tomorrow for the winner of this giveaway, and to see what great gift we have for Sunday. Remember, we’ll be giving away a travel gift each day right up till Christmas.
