There is only one thing that will send all the animals running to the kitchen. A stampede of three cats and two dogs (and three kids who get a kick out of watching) caused by the sound of our can opener. The funny thing about it, though, is that it’s a manual can opener – the kind you have to crank, and not very loud or noisy at all.

Turbo wants some tuna

There is a distinctive click as it bites into the can and though the grinding noise it makes as it works its way around the lid isn’t obnoxious like an electric opener, it’s just loud enough that five sets of ears perk up and come running, hoping for some of the water drained off from the can and into a bowl. Yep, even the dogs love it!

While the rest of the animals are content to wait their turn, Turbo is always right underfoot, meowing and clamoring to be the first at a chance for some tasty water.

I was trying to make tuna melts for dinner Saturday night, and not really in the mood to deal with all the animals in the kitchen, but Turbo was actually pretty patient (for Turbo — after all, I was standing there just taking pictures of him instead of getting to work!) so I buckled, and he got his treat of tuna water. After he had his fill, the rest of them came over for a few laps before wandering off themselves.

What special (and safe!) treats do your pets get?

I’ve found that they love anything with a strong tuna smell and flavor. These fishball snacks are perfect for them, and the added bonus of some catnip makes it that much more appealing to them!

Tuna fish, long a pantry staple, has come out of the cupboard. Creative, frugal cooks across America are finding new and interesting uses for canned tuna, in addition to traditional tuna fish sandwiches–so says a new survey by the National Fisheries Institute.

According to a recent National Fisheries Institute survey, more than four out of five (86 percent) U.S. adults usually keep cans or pouches of tuna in the house at any given time. More than half (56 percent) of adults have at least three cans or pouches of tuna on hand, and one in four (25 percent) usually keep five or more cans or pouches of tuna at home. With tuna already stocked on so many household shelves, families have a versatile lean protein ingredient ready to make a variety of modern-day dishes.

The survey found one of the most popular ways to eat tuna is with a “crunch.” Those who have eaten a tuna fish sandwich say the most common additions to tuna, beyond mayo (73 percent), include onions (41 percent), lettuce (40 percent), celery (27 percent) or pickles (25 percent). Naturally, people’s tastes vary. More than one in ten adults who have eaten a tuna fish sandwich put potato chips (12 percent) on tuna sandwiches, and slightly more like mustard (15 percent) with tuna. About 1 percent like to put tuna on their pizza. Whether adding crunch to a tuna sandwich or using tuna as a topping, it’s simple to use what is already in the cupboard to make delicious meals.

Bagel Tuna Melt

1 bagel (preferably everything or onion)

1 can of your favorite tuna (in water, not oil)

Chopped onion

Chopped celery

2 tbsp mayonaise or Miracle Whip

1/2 c shredded cheddar

Slice bagel in half and put in the toaster oven or broiler to warm. Drain tuna and combine in a bowl with mayo, onion, and celery. Add salt, pepper, oregano, and any other seasonings you like. Mix well. Put half of the tuna on each half of the bagel, spreading it evenly with a fork. Sprinkle shredded cheese on top, covering completely. Return to the toaster oven or broiler for 2-3 minutes or until totally melted and browning.

Eat while still nice and warm, and be sure to use your hands because it’s more fun that way. Enjoy a beer or a glass of white wine, savoring your amazing domesticity.
