Stop!

Whatever it is you’re doing, just stop, pull out a pen and paper, or open a blank computer document, and describe what is happening around you right now.

If you’re in a busy place, just list the things you can hear, see, smell, the type of weather, your mood, etc. Don’t worry about descriptions, unless they come to you now. Even if they seem silly, write them down. Do this as fast as you can. Take in everything going on, right in your immediate area, and also down the street or across the road. Snatch and grab at the movement, sounds, sights and scents closing in on you.

If where you are is really quiet, take your time for this entry. Stop and really listen. What do you hear? Breathe in and out slowly and feel the air passing through your lungs and trickling out of your mouth and nose. I strongly suggest using a pen and paper if you have quiet surroundings. Drink in the atmosphere with all your senses on full alert. Close your eyes, if it helps. What can you smell? Is the air swirling around you warm, cold? How do the things you can sense make you feel?

I hope you enjoy this journal writing prompt. Please leave any comments in the section below.

Here in Australia we celebrated Australia Day today. There is usually a public holiday for the event with lots of barbeques, celebrations of every kind and fireworks. This year the public holiday will be on Monday. Tonight my daughter and I headed down to North Beach and watched both the fireworks in Fremantle and then Hillarys Boat Harbour from our vantage point on the coast.
Fireworks always provoke memories. So, today, write about fireworks. If the thought brings some childhood memory to mind involve all your senses to bring the memory alive. Have fun with this journal writing prompt.
