HomeAway offers listings of over 118,000 vacation rental properties around the world, giving travelers the ability to search and sort properties by location, price, number of bedrooms, amenities, and whether they allow pets.  You’ll find everything from cozy rural retreats, allowing you to escape from the busy pace of city life, to urban condos that allow the suburbanite to be a city dweller for a little while.

I spent some time searching around the site, and found lots of local options that are very tempting.  It would be great to spend a weekend in a penthouse condo, with a 180 degree view overlooking both the city and the water.  I’ll be adding this option to my list of places to search next time I’m looking for a place to stay – whether here at home or on the road.

I’ve opted for an apartment on a few travels, and have found it a great way to feel more like a local than a tourist.  (The photo is from a Paris apartment that I rented.)

Find a Vacation Home with HomeAway

Example: One of these vacation homes shown in the show is the amazing Redwood Tree House on the Russian River in Healdsburg, CA. One, this is an absolutely beautiful area. I love this part of Californian. Two, what other vacation home has a tree growing through it? Not many I’d wager.

Above is the front entry. I think that this would be a nice place for a peaceful simple wedding (or the honeymoon). There’s wine tasting near by (more than 60 wineries within 10 miles), and the amazing views:

Ah. They have a nice hot tub overlooking this view as well. Plus you can’t beat the weather in Sonoma County; besides Humboldt, it’s one of my favorite places in CA.
