Yay! Mark Bittman Is Finally Writing The Partially-Vegan Weight Loss Book Of My Dreams

Yay! Mark Bittman Is Finally Writing The Partially-Vegan Weight Loss Book Of My Dreams

One of the things I love most about New York Times food columnist Mark Bittman (and there are many things I love about him) is how open he’s been about his own weight and weight loss–particularly, the “vegan before 6pm” diet that he came up with for himself.  Now, New York magazine says, he’s turning that diet into a book, which is probably the first weight loss book I’ve genuinely been excited about.  According to the magazine, VB6: Eat Vegan Before 6:00 to Lose Weight and Restore Your Health … for Good is due out in March. Entertaining While Vegan: Author Cornelia Guest On The Cruelty-Free Life

Entertaining While Vegan: Author Cornelia Guest On The Cruelty-Free Life

Philanthropist and entrepreneur and health advocate Cornelia Guest is perhaps not a typical vegan. The daughter of actor, socialite, and fashion icon C.Z. Guest and polo champion Winston Frederick Churchill Guest, she’s about as blue-blooded as they come. But Guest is also an activist–and an animal lover. Which is what inspired her to write her new book, Cornelia Guest’s Simple Pleasures, which blends healthy vegan cooking and baking with high-brown entertaining. More »

Boxer Timothy Bradley Jr. Says A Vegan Diet Will Help Him Beat Manny Pacquiao

Boxer Timothy Bradley Jr. Says A Vegan Diet Will Help Him Beat Manny Pacquiao

World champion boxer and WBO Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao and WBO Light Welterweight Champion Timothy Bradley Jr. will face off in the ring on June 9 for Pacquiao’s title, in what is sure to be a hugely-watched fight. And while Pacquiao is pretty widely favored to win, he’s admitted that Bradley is “a different kind of fighter.” Could it be because Bradley has a secret weapon that a lot of endurance athletes seem to be touting lately–a vegan diet? Lance Armstrong Is (Mostly) Vegan, Proving Even Mainstream Athletes Don’t Need Meat

Lance Armstrong Is (Mostly) Vegan, Proving Even Mainstream Athletes Don't Need Meat

Vegan athletes used to be unheard of; they’re still niche, but a handful of impressive, outspoken advocates (Brendan Brazier, Rich Roll, and Scott Jurek) are pushing a plant-based, super-active lifestyle into the spotlight, at least among the health-obsessed. But now Lance Armstrong is on board, and we’re pretty sure this could launch it into a full-blown trend. More »

PETA Explains Why They Use Naked Women And Offensive Ads To Sell Veganism

PETA Explains Why They Use Naked Women And Offensive Ads To Sell Veganism

If all you know about People For Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is based on their ad campaigns, the organization may seem like a bad idea machine run by crazed, misogynistic vegans who’d rather throw a nude woman under a bus than eat Jello salad. But according to PETA’s Lindsay Rajt, who’s the organization’s Associate Director of Campaigns, that’s okay with them–because every time someone’s angry about another offensive ad campaign, someone else is donating money to one of their less offensive ones. PETA’s Worst Idea Ever: Make OJ Simpson’s House A ‘Meat Is Murder’ Museum

PETA's Worst Idea Ever: Make OJ Simpson's House A 'Meat Is Murder' Museum

Oh, PETA. While I agree with you that luxury fox fur merkins aren’t exactly desirable or the best use of resources, I’m just not sure I can get behind turning the former residence of an accused (but acquitted) murderer into a “Meat is Murder” museum. Which, according to Teddy Hilton, is exactly what you’re trying to do with O.J. Simpson‘s soon-to-be-foreclosed house. This, PETA, is not how you get people on your side. More »

Mark Bittman’s Truthbomb: Reducing Your Meat Intake Isn’t As Difficult As You Think

Mark Bittman's Truthbomb: Reducing Your Meat Intake Isn't As Difficult As You Think

Flexitarian. Lessitarian. Semi-vegan. There are a lot of titles that pertain to the way Mark Bittman, cookbook author and New York Times writer, chooses to eat. But they all pretty much boil down to the same thing: healthy, simply, and with a little less meat and dairy than the rest of the United States is regularly consuming. In a blog post on his site today, Bittman, who has had several forays into vegetarianism, but still chooses to eat a little meat here and there, explains what meat-avoiders have been saying for years: that it’s really not difficult to limit your intake of animal products, and that you don’t have to “go vegan” just to eat better. And you know what? He’s spot-on. More »

PETA: Still Selling Veganism With Sex, Now With Alicia Silverstone

PETA: Still Selling Veganism With Sex, Now With Alicia Silverstone

We all know sex sells, and that’s the creative approach that PETA is taking, once again, with its annual Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity contest, now open for voting. Their advertisement, below, features Alicia Silverstone, swimming naked (either before or after the baby she delivered just a few weeks ago) and talking about how vegetarianism is the best change she’s ever made in her life. I guess the whole point of this thing is to make more of us associate sexiness with a diet free from animal products, but something about their incessant use of sex is starting to creep me out. Why Your Quinoa Might Be Causing World Hunger

Why Your Quinoa Might Be Causing World Hunger

I know we’ve already had a heated debate about vegan concerts today, and I just wrote about how McDonald’s serves more ethical fish across the pond. But I just have a little more food for thought (no pun intended) before you head to happy hour: Quinoa, the ancient “grain” (technically, it’s a seed) that’s is full of fiber, protein, and nutrition, may be good for you, but it’s apparently really really awful for the people who grow it (and used to eat it). The first world’s obsession with the nutritious grain is sapping Bolivia — the primary country responsible for growing the crop — of its own food source, starving indigenous populations of their traditional cuisine. That’s pretty effed up, and it also raises the question: What other super-healthy foods are we consuming that might be screwing up the world’s food systems and making it impossible for other people to afford their dinners? The Vegan Stoner: “Baked” Recipes For Meat-Free Munchies

The Vegan Stoner: "Baked" Recipes For Meat-Free Munchies

Vegan recipe blogs abound on the internet, but here’s one that’s catered for those who enjoy a little wacky tabacky (not that I would ever do such a thing … unless you have any). It’s called The Vegan Stoner, and it posts quick and easy vegan recipes ideal for when you have an attack of the meat-free munchies. Delightful hand-drawn caricatures adorn each recipe, looking stuffed from the nom-nom-noms, and obviously, are nicely “toasted.” Brought to you by Sarah Conrique and Graham I. Haynes, they are also working on releasing the eponymous cookbook. Some sample recipes include Pita Pizzas, Fresh “Baked” Granola (hyuh hyuh hyuh), and Sloppy Joes. And of course, the last step for each recipe is, quite simply, “Munch.”

Just a tip: to prevent burning yourself on the oven when preparing these meals, try not to Wake n’ Bake. More »

Exclusive Interview:Forks Over Knives Director Lee Fulkerson Says Going Vegan Is Easier Than You Think

Exclusive Interview:Forks Over Knives Director Lee Fulkerson Says Going Vegan Is Easier Than You Think

Forks Over Knives is a new documentary set to hit North American cinemas this Friday, and has a scathing critique of our current western diet. The film, which tracks the clinical and scientific research of two doctors (T. Colin Campbell, and Caldwell B. Esselstyn, holds our current obsession with meat and animal products to the proverbial fire, and makes the perhaps radical but also scientifically and medically-sound conclusion that if we were to all give up animal products, we would halt, regress, prevent (and even cure) all of the major diseases afflicting us: Obesity, hypertension, high blood pressure, all kinds of cancer, heart disease, type 2 Diabetes, gout, scurvy, erectile dysfunction, coronary embolisms…and that’s just the short list. The film’s director, Lee Fulkerson, took the time to answer some questions about the difficulty of switching to veganism, some favorite vegan recipes, and accusations that his film is just vegan propaganda: More »

Flashback Friday: Vegan Celebrities, à la 1990

Flashback Friday: Vegan Celebrities, à la 1990

Thanks to celebrities and talk show hosts like Oprah and Ellen, in 2011 veganism has almost gone mainstream (or at least, mainstream television), but it’s easy to forget how just a couple of decades ago, eating tofu and vegetables was not only fringe; it sparked considerable debate. Back in 1990, Phil Donahue invited River Phoenix, Lisa Bonet, and Raul Julia – then a rare breed of vegan celebrity – to come talk about their diet and the shift in thought about how we should be feeding the world; John Robbins, of “Diet for a New America” fame, also joined the celebs to talk about the positive impact that ditching meat and dairy could make.
