Ignore The Hype — Organic Food Is Still Better For You

Ignore The Hype -- Organic Food Is Still Better For You

Organic food is no more nutritious than non-organic.” If you’ve read a newspaper, looked at Google News or watched The Today Show this morning, you may have heard this (generally preceded or followed by the words “study says,” so you know it’s Science. Sanctioned.). Don’t believe it. If you look a little closer, you’ll see that a “study says” no such thing — at least not if you consider “healthy” and “nutritious” to mean free of pesticides, antibiotics and hormones. More »

Trying a Vegan Challenge? Be Aware Of The Vitamins You’ll Miss.

Trying a Vegan Challenge? Be Aware Of The Vitamins You'll Miss.

It’s been nearly two years since I became a vegetarian (I also avoid most dairy products, but not all, so I can’t quite call myself a vegan). When I first told family and friends that I was changing my lifestyle to avoid eating animals, instead of support and encouragement, I got a lot of concerned looks. But where will you get your protein? Why would you cut out such important food groups? That’s just crazy–we need meat in our diets to build muscle and give us energy. And on and on it went. Not that I wasn’t a tad concerned about some of those issues myself–would I really be denying my body important vitamins and minerals? I thought I was doing OK until a couple of months ago. More »

Franken-fruits And Super Broccoli: Are We In For A Future Of Designer Produce?

‘Witches Fingers’ grapes may sound scary, but what about other types of cross-bred, designer produce? Sure, some of it—cotton candy grapes, anyone?—seems straight out of Willy Wonka. But other designer fruits and veggies—like super broccoli, selenium-enriched tomatoes and vitamin-D enhanced mushrooms—have been engineered to contain more nutrients than typical varieties. That’s a good thing … right? More »

To Juice Or Not To Juice? Our Answer To The Question

To Juice Or Not To Juice? Our Answer To The Question

There’s a lot of hype around juicing and its health benefits, and nearly as much skepticism about the expensive nutrition trend. “Don’t drink fruit juice and absolutely avoid a high-fructose diet,” says Tim Ferriss, author of the 4-Hour Body and advocate of a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. But many swear by the health benefits of drinking juiced fruits and vegetables regularly. More »

Supplements Could Increase Death Odds For Older Women

Supplements Could Increase Death Odds For Older Women

In our efforts to maintain good health into old age, many of us take supplements, but a new study suggests that this could be a big mistake, thanks to new evidence that some supplements actually increase older women’s death odds. According to a 19-year study of 39,000 women, those who took multivitamins, iron, Vitamin B-6, folic acid, magnesium, zinc or copper supplements had a 2.4% increase in chance of death over the span of the study. And the only supplement that seemed to improve women’s odds of death was calcium. So is it time to toss your pills? Doctors say not yet: The study was purely observational; it didn’t examine the actual cause-and-effect of taking supplements on life span, so it shouldn’t be cause for major alarm. More »

Folic Acid: How Too Much Of A Good Thing Could Fuel Cancer

Folic Acid: How Too Much Of A Good Thing Could Fuel Cancer

What do common breakfast foods like cereal, granola, and toast all have in common? They’re all fortified with folic acid. Which would be great, except that on top of a healthy, balanced diet (and multivitamin, which typically contain 100% daily value on their own), all those fortified foods may lead to excess folic acid intake, something that could fuel pre-cancerous cell growth. Real Women Respond: What Vitamins and Supplements Do You Take?

Real Women Respond: What Vitamins and Supplements Do You Take?

This isn’t a post about what vitamins and/or supplements women should take—it’s about what vitamins and supplements we do take. I started wondering how my vitamin/supplement regimen stacked up to other women’s: Was there anything crucial I was missing out on? Did I take more vitamins and supplements than other women my age, or less? So I polled my friends, family members, colleagues and acquaintances. This is a highly unscientific survey, sure, but some trends definitely emerge—biotin is popular, as are multivitamins and children’s vitamins (not taking anything is popular, too). Read some of the responses below—and then tell us about your own vitamin and supplement regimen in the comments. More »

The Whole Fruit, And Nothing But The Fruit: Nutritional Benefits Of The Peel

The Whole Fruit, And Nothing But The Fruit: Nutritional Benefits Of The Peel

That old adage of “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” isn’t a bad one to abide, but perhaps it should be changed to “an apple peel a day…” A new study says the peel is not only full of heart-healthy fiber; it also helps prevent muscle deterioration and keeps our waistlines in check.
