This may become a regular series, the way we’re going! We had our home inspection this morning for the kitten fostering we’ve been looking into, and have been approved!
Within the next few hours we’ll be getting a litter of four kittens who will likely only be with us overnight, as we’ll have to take them into Petco tomorrow for an adoption event, and there’s a very good chance they’ll all find new homes. I’m very excited just the same, and think this is going to be a great experience for all of us.

Fostering Cats

Yesterday my family and I stopped at the pet store to pick up some dog food. In the front of the store they had cages set up with cats and kittens available for adoption, so of course we had to take a little detour.
While my girls ooh’d and ahh’d over the kittens, my husband and I got to talking with one of the volunteers about the three cats we already have. Though we’re not “in the market” for any more pets we do miss having kittens around (and the girls have never had kittens!), the volunteer mentioned that they can …read more

Do your children belong to a 4-H Club? Did you participate in one as a child? Were you, as a parent, ever a leader in one?
I have fond memories of all the 4-H Club experiences when I was growing up, from 6-years old until I was out of high school. In our farming area, this was one of the main social activities for youngsters, with our leader, Mrs. Hoag (Aunt Mary) to many keeping us busy and learning new tasks.
Eventually Mrs. Thompson joined her as our cooking leader. Aunt Mary taught sewing and most everythin else.
What did we do?

When I finally gave in to that maternal side of myself that my astrological sign says is ingrained in me (despite my previous efforts to ignore it), I wore that “mom thing” like panty hose. I worked hard, wiggling and contorting myself until I finally felt comfortable in that role. Once there, I have to admit it fit me nicely. It improved me. I may have gotten carried away with that hazy, forgiving shadow motherhood casts on us moms because I began to have this ridiculous illusion that one day I would be one of those SuperMom PTO presidents.
Really now. I …read more
Are You On Sale?

In Women & Money, Suze Orman says women walk around as if they are “on sale.” Not for sale, because everyone gets paid to do something or has a monetary value applied to what they do, but on sale.
As in Clearance: 50% off!
This is wrong, Orman says, because if we don’t value what we do enough to charge full price then no one else will and that’s why we’re behind the game when it comes to money.

Other People’s Children

A friend recently told me she thinks she’s ready to have kids because when all her pregnant or mother friends endlessly blabber on about the minute details of discharge or tantrums she’s actually not annoyed.
I told her that the reason I know that I am absolutely finished having children is because I am over being interested and back to being annoyed.
I’m a pretty good volunteer, I do my public service. I focus on my strengths, I enjoy teenagers, especially the “bad” ones, so I volunteer as a mentor and for a teen outreach in the community. I run a book club to give women …read more
