I found this video online last night and have watched it about half a dozen times since (though a couple of those viewings were so I could show it to my husband and kids, too!).

The video stars Woody, a tabby cat in Japan who really, really likes his water! Throughout the three minute video, Woody repeatedly ducks his head under a running kitchen faucet and then licks up the resulting droplets that fall from his head.

It’s very cute and such a “cat thing” that it makes me smile just thinking about it. Our own tabby, Sage, also her own water quirk, though it’s probably more common. She pretty much only tolerates standing water in a water dish. She knows our schedule pretty well, as far as filling the food and water dishes, and will stake them out and wait for us to fill it with fresh water. She’ll then try and drink from the cup we use to pour water into the dish.

We’ve tried one of those automatic water fountains, but found it to be more trouble than it was worth. We were cleaning it daily because it just attracted gunk and growth, which it was apparently supposed to eliminate in the first place. Daily cleaning of a dish is easy with a plain one, but the fountain didn’t last too long and Sage just had to learn to deal again.

Does your cat have any water quirks?

Things that make it easier to bring your dog along on hiking trips, camping trips or just a walk around the neighborhood are always welcome in my pet supply drawer!
This cool gadget is a Handi Drink dog bottle, and the all-in-one design makes it self dispenses water but keeps it safely contained when it’s not break time.
It folds out into a dish for a dog or cat to drink from, and when they’re done, the water (or food!) easily goes back in and the unit closes up. They’re available from Amazon for $9.99.

They were outside dogs so it was important that they always had a full bowl, and as summer, in particular, would drag on it became more of a pain to keep a constant eye on it (of course, even as a kid I knew how important it was and did it anyway!).

Even though our dogs are indoor only now, they go outside to do their business and like to lounge in the sun for a while. In the summer we keep a dish of water out for them, but it gets hot quickly and tends to collect bugs.

One solution for this is the WaterDog automatic faucet unit from WaterDog Pet Fountain.

The WaterDog attaches right to an outdoor spigot and provides fresh water as your dog needs it, due to a motion sensor on the unit. It’s even adjustable so you can move it up and down depending on the size of your dog, and you can set up a remote unit away from a faucet.

Would your dogs use something like this?

We recently put up a soft-sided above-ground pool and all got in for the first time this weekend.

We’ve had Chip since he was a puppy and know that he’s never swam before, so we carefully brought him in with us and let him paddle around for a minute. Though he’s not able to tell us what he thought of the experience, he was licking and wagging his tail when we held him, so I’d guess he didn’t mind too much! He also seemed to like following my husband around and swimming to him.

Honey, on the other hand, had a brief paddle before clinging to my husband before he lifted her back out to me. She’s never been crazy about getting wet — though she’ll put up with baths she hates going out when it’s raining, and avoids the yard altogether when we’re watering plants.

She doesn’t like the sound of water either — whether in a spray bottle or running from the kitchen faucet. We don’t know much about her history up until the time we got her so we don’t know what might have happened to her to make her so wary of water.

Since it’s an above-ground pool with a removable ladder, there’s no chance she’ll get into the pool by accident, otherwise we’d bring her in so we could teach her how to get herself out (swim to the steps). So my first instinct, since she gives no signs of enjoying it, is to not going to bring her into the pool anymore. But I wonder if bringing her in with us and helping her feel safe and secure might help her get over whatever issue she has with it. What do you think?

While I despise the woman who slapped my hand for my lack of eco friendly totalitarianism, I still respect the movement to create a more friendly attitude and actions toward our planet. With all of the informational resources available, there is no excuse to claim ignorance on the subject matter of conservation. The “Unplugged Living” blog is the perfect place to start stock piling ideas for being an eco friendly human. It is where I started my quest for earth saving knowledge, because it gives ideas that are easy to implement. If we all commit to picking up just one new green habit, every month, to add to our practices, the earth would greatly benefit from it (and so would our electricity and water bills!) Here is the mini interview that Noel was so sweet to take part in. Read it and then head over to Unplugged Living to start living green!

How would you describe Unplugged Living in one sentence?
Unplugged living is about alternative energy, conservation, recycling,
and other things that could help offload mother nature.

Do you ever wish that kids or spouses had a plug that you could pull when necessary?
Oh definitely. I have a son and when he was around 2 to 3 years old,
you just wish there’s a plug or an off button so you can turn him
off. I think they call this age, the terrible twos where they climb,
write on the walls and do stuff that you told them not to do.
Now that my son is 4 years old, I need that plug for another reason.
Whenever we go to the mall and he sees the toy section, he will force
his way to that area and find a toy that he wants and won’t let go.
If I only have a remote where I can type “shutdown now” just like what
I do when I shutdown my linux machine, that would be very very
helpful.

I see that you have a lot of solar posts on your blog. Would you say that the sun is the best kept secret in energy sources, or the most ignored?
I think it is. It is an open secret if you can say that because a lot
of people know that solar technology exists but they don’t find ways
to use it. The sun has the capacity to power the entire planet
several times over.

Recycling…I think that it is a good thing, but I am leery of recycled
water. It just seems gross. What is your take on it?
I give it to somebody who doesn’t complain. My lawn and my plants

Earth Day…The earth only deserves one day of recognition? Yet we abuse it
everyday. Don’t you agree that it should be earth day, everyday?
Yup. I agree. Everyday should be Earth Day.

What is the one conservation project that you are most proud to say that you
take part in?
I say it would be the continuous waste segregation. It is simple and
yet is has one of the most impact in conservation. One doesn’t need
any special devices, just the will to segregate your household waste.
Our whole neighborhood is involved so it is great to see other
people make simple contributions for conservation.

What is one plugged in item, in your house, that you couldn’t live without?
I think that would be the refrigerator, otherwise all our food would
spoil and we need to keep on going to the grocery every day. That
would be a total waste of petrol.

What made you decide to blog about freeloading off of Mother Nature?
It’s one of my passion. Ever since I was a kid, I was fascinated with
solar energy, wind energy and other renewable energy sources.
One of my goals is to live entirely using power that I produce. It
might take a lot of money to do that but that’s one of the things I
really want to achieve.
