Pre-work rituals
I’ve had a guest at my job this week and it’s been kind of stressful. This person is there to help, but things have just seemed kind of out of balance.
She’s the type of person that doesn’t let you “land” when you come in the office. As soon as my key is in the door, she’s asking me about something or just starts talking.
It wasn’t until I read this article at Web Worker Daily that I realized she’s messing with my pre-work rituals:
Whether it’s vacuuming your keyboard, taking a long walk, or making a pot of coffee, you probably …read more
Getting work done when you’re not inspired
This may be more for me than for you today, but I’m having the worst time getting my brain back in gear and staying on task at work after traveling the past couple of weeks even after trying to follow my own advice about decompressing after vacation.
Web Worker Daily has some hints about How to Get your Work Done When You’re Not Inspired
The part I struggle with the most is the advice to “Go for quantity first, then evaluate for quality”.

Getting back into the work week
Monday usually isn’t fun for anyone on the job after enjoying a weekend.
I’m all about making your weekend seem longer, but sometimes that makes Monday harder to face.

One thing that I would add is that it always helps me to leave my desk somewhat organized and leave myself notes about where to begin Monday morning.
Getting Control of Your Day
Web Worker Daily is one of my favorite sites, and, I don’t even work from home, well, for pay, anyway.
There’s a great article, How to Take Control of Your Day When You’re Overwhelmed that really spoke to me, offering tips about how to “get a grip” that can be applied to both work and home.
The best advice? Stop and think.
So many times, when everything seems out of control, whether it be before a board meeting, or, before dinner, a good old fashioned deep breath is all you need to get back on track, and, get a handle on your …read more
Exercise While You Work
Will the office of the future combine exercise and work?
According to Dr. James Levine they will:
Sitting at their desks is about the last thing workers would do in Dr. James Levine’s office of the future.
Instead of being sedentary in front of their computers, they’d stand. But instead of standing still, they’d walk on a treadmill. And instead of meeting around a conference table, they’d talk business while walking laps on a track.
An intriguing idea, but, it looks like one would have to be awfully coordinated to do some of those things.

How to manage kids in a home office
Web Worker Daily gives some tips regarding how to manage kids in a home office.
I salute those of you who work at home with children.
Though I don’t work full time from home, I do need to do some online work in the evenings and on weekends. I try very hard to do it after they go to bed, or, during natural “downtime” during the day. However, sometimes I don’t feel like I’m serving either my children or my work very well.
I suppose I ought to read the article, though, as I am coming to you live from my bathroom floor, …read more
