Ideally, breakfast should be the biggest, most power-filled meal of the day. If you want to make your breakfast even healthier, make sure you incorporate whole-grain products, such as breads and cereals with barley or rye. A new study indicates that such carbo-rich foods have low glycemic index (GI) and can help regulate your blood sugar the whole day!

“It is known that a carbohydrate-rich breakfast with low GI can moderate increases in blood sugar after lunch. But my results show that low GI in combination with the right amount of so-called indigestible carbohydrates, that is, dietary fiber and resistant starch, can keep the blood-sugar level low for up to ten hours, which means until after dinner,” says Anne Nilsson, a doctoral student at the Unit for Applied Nutrition and Food Chemistry and author of the dissertation.

In addition, the study also suggests that after the meal, those who had eaten low GI breakfasts could concentrate better and had a better working memory (a type of short-term memory) than the other group. Read the full article to see how the right breakfast can help your productivity as well as help you manage your blood sugar.

Several weeks ago (months actually, as the last quarter has been a frenzied chaos for me), I was sent a box of Fiber One Chew Bars (Oats and Chocolate), for review. I placed them in our pantry with every intention of trying them out the first minute I can sit down and study the accompanying reading materials they sent. Now I’m kicking myself for not having tried them earlier!

If you want the short version, here it is: Fiber One Oat and Chocolate Chewy Bars are fabulous!

They taste great, not too sweet, with just the right amount of chocolatey goodness for the flavor, but not too much to make you feel like you’re eating a chocolate bar instead. I find the texture just right: chewy, but not rough, not dry, doesn’t crumble, and doesn’t take ages til you can swallow without injuring your throat.

On the nutritional viewpoint, one bar is supposedly enough to provide 35% of your daily dietary requirement for fiber. What’s fiber good for? Aside from keeping you “regular”, fiber intake has also been documented to help prevent cancer, lower blood cholesterol, and improve blood sugar control. I am surprised that none of these health claims appear on the package label of Fiber One.

Aside from fiber, they are also a good source of calcium (10% of daily value), has no trans-fats and clocks up only 140 calories per bar. They’re perfect as snacks for those always on the go.
