I came across this little rant at Vox Populi at the Savannah Now online newspaper. I don’t know who wrote it, I suppose its safe to say the person comes from Georgia.
“I am so tired of going to church on Sunday only to hear my preacher preach about women who wear wigs and have weaves in their hair. I have alopecia and have no choice but to wear a wig. I think it is insulting to have a minister preach on such things.”
This person brings up a good point. While …read more

A man, who lives in the south-western part of Germany has been trying to have the costs of his “wigs” covered by his health insurance provider. He believes that his insurance should pay for them because he has had hair-loss problems since childhood.
His claims have been denied. The insurance company states:
The hair’s protective function against the sun and the cold can easily be replaced by a hat. The health insurance does not have to pay for that.
The insurance company will provide hair coverage for women and children. You should note that health insurance in Germany, will cover …read more

The inimitable Hsien-Hsien Lei tipped me off to this one. Seems the big boys are reaching out to the wig-wearing as well as the home-town salon. (I know that’s a sexist expression and that Pantene is really more of a woman’s brand, but “big girls” just doesn’t convey the same means. Plus it’s more likely to get me slapped for no good reason.)
I’ve seen several stories lately – two of which I highlighted in early January – about local salons who are catering to a wig wearing clientèle by sharpening their wig styling skills. In addition I’ve covered a …read more

I came across a trio of articles that seem interesting.
The first, from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, is a profile of Darlene Usadel, a hair dresser who has a growing clientèle of wig wearers. Ms. Usadel began dressing wigs ten years ago when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Since then, she has found not only a new business niche, but a way to give encouragement and hope to those experiencing alopecia, both chemotherapy-induced and not.
The second article, profiles Scottish salon Angel Hair Designs, who is doing much the same thing on the other side of the pond. Says stylist Lesley Docherty, “It …read more
Hair Stylist Turned Wig Stylist

Here’s a nice little story by Norman Miller about Trevor Sorbie, a UK hair stylist who counts a number of celebrities among his clientèle. Last September, Sorbie launched an initiative, My New Hair, which both offers free wig customization for women who are experiencing medical hair loss and trains other hairdressers to do the same.
“I have a lot of experience in cutting wigs, and any hairdresser can learn to provide this invaluable service to clients. Coping with illness is very traumatic, and to have the added stress of hair loss can be devastating. Hairdressers are very involved with their clients …read more
