Just how huge will the wind farm be? Well, they are looking at putting in 30 units of windmills in the piece of land that they are considering. The company has already done a feasibility study and it seems like they are going to be building it in the northern part of the city where there is also a water reservoir. The land is owned by the Gulf Coast Water Authority.

They still have to create proposals and have these approved. But this is a really huge project and it may take some time to complete if they are looking at pushing this through.

Iran has been known to be a good source of power not only for the citizens of the country itself but also to other countries surrounding it. See, this country has been providing other countries like Russia, Georgia, and Armenia with power. With the additional wind power plant that they are building, more and more people will have access to clean energy.

Kudos to you Iran!

This is a real good way to teach and promote renewable energy and how to conserve energy. A school which has been granted solar panels or which has been given wind turbines could have kids experience first hand what these alternative energy tools actually do.

Sean Marchetto is the science consultant of the Catholic School District in Calgary. On this, he says, “This is an example of stewardship in action.” And he is right. A lot of students have been able to easily absorb what these solar panels and wind turbines are all about.

They are also scouting the area and looking for a good location of a wind farm. They also disclosed that they are looking at a more remote area of the county. It sure would not be a good idea to have a wind farm in a community though.

There have been some reactions though and one was the kind of noise that such a wind turbine could bring. According to the experts behind the wind turbine, it would not be giving off any really loud sounds. All the noise that it would make would be less than 50 decibels.

The wind turbine costs $250,000 and each of its blades measure 25 feet.

However, in this city that never sleeps and in this city where everything seemingly can be done, there is a first and it can be found in Times Square. It is the very first green billboard. What makes this billboard green is the fact that it has been developed so much so that it does not depend on the grid. All its power is going to come from the wind and the sun. However, people behind the billboard are saying that if both the wind and the sun do not deliver, this billboard just goes out flat.

But according to Ron Ptesky, one of the senior VPs of the company that is behind this billboard, “We think if that happens, it’s just fine.”

I think it’s fine too.

Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (sometimes called VAWT) , is mounted vertically just like what was shown on the video above. One thing I like about vertical axis wind turbine is that the motor is positioned usually at the base, unlike the propeller types where the motor is positioned usually at the back of the rotating blades which sits high above the pole. It would be easier to do maintenance on VAWT.

This vertical wind turbine from mariah power is rated at 1.2Kw of power. It will start rotating at wind speeds of about 9mph and can withstand 100mph winds. It also has a built-in wireless zigbee modem. This means your computer can access the turbine’s data such as wind speed and power produced. Now that’s cool.

I was browsing CNN.com and found this story about John Yancey and the wind turbines on their family’s farmland. Yancey lives with his wife and children on the Tug Hill plateau, half a mile from the old farmhouse in which he and his seven siblings were raised.

John Yancey’s dad Ed Yancey signed a contract with the power companies to erect several wind turbines on their land at a lease price of at least $6,600 per annum.

“It’s better than a nuclear plant,” he says. “And it brings in good money.”

Ben Byer, a 75-year-old retired dairy farmer, feels the same way.

“It sure beats milking cows,” he says of the seven turbines on his land.

However, the young Yancey hates the sight and hates the sound. According to him, “he can’t stand the gigantic flickering shadows the blades cast at certain points in the day”.

I don’t know about you but for $6,600 per wind turbine annually, I could just “sound proof” my house and live off the “passive income”. Five of those would bring me an easy $33,000 a year. Not bad for something that didn’t cost me anything.

How about you? Should you have a farmland and a power company offered you $6,600 annual for each wind turbine they erect on your farmland, would you take it?

In fact, they are looking at creating a wind farm which could be holding a hundred turbines. These turbines could stand even taller than the very famous Statue of Liberty in New York.

Now that is something good, right? However, there are environmentalists who are saying that before they do start on such a project, the people behind this should first check out just what would be the disadvantages that the environment could be having.

I think that was just a reminder to all.

If not for the Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (MMPA) project, these 11 cities may not have been this excited about such a project. The MMPA is actually an electricity cooperative that has goals of bringing in the benefits of wind power to ordinary residents. And having a project such as this one could really be a big leap for their goals.

Dan Voss is the electric utility director over at Anoka and he shares, “Our project is sort of unique because, instead of having a construction company build 40 towers in a farm field, each member city will have a turbine in town.”
