Women are complicated sexual beings. As the topic of women’s health and sexuality has grown in interest over the last ten years, so have studies to discover ways to increase sexual satisfaction in women. I am excited to see women and doctors talking about this subject and openly addressing the idea that women might need to work a little harder to be sexually satisfied.

Zestra is a new product made from natural botanical oils that is applied on a woman’s body to increase sexual satisfaction. I wanted to hear a little more about how Zestra works, so I conducted an interview with Dr. Michael Krychman, MDCM about the product. Dr. Krychman is the medical director for Sexual Medicine in Newport Beach, CA and formerly served as Co-Director of Sexual Medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He has experience studying sexual dysfunction in cancer and non-cancer patients.

Q: I understand that Zestra is made from natural botanical oils. Can you explain how it affects a woman’s body once it is applied? How would it affect other parts of the body?

A: The oil is topically applied and most women can expect a pleasant tingly or warming sensation within 3-5 minutes—this has been coined the Zestra Rush™!!! Women should apply the oil to the mons, clitoris, labia or outer areas of the vagina. In clinical situations, I have also suggested some women apply it to the breast and nipple area—sometimes nipple and breast sensation can be diminished so the use of Zestra can also be helpful. Rarely, for some women, this feeling may result in a temporary feeling of discomfort, but it can be washed off simply with soap and water.

Q: How is sexual satsifaction measured in a woman?

A: Sexual satisfaction can be measured in a variety of ways—patients can either self report the strength of orgasm/latency (time to orgasm), their overall improved sexual function and of course sexual domains like arousal and desire can be measured by objective questionnaires which are typically used in the research setting. Very often in the clinical setting, health care providers will ask patients to personally rate their satisfaction on a linear scale, e.g. 1=bad, 10 = great, since sexuality is so individual and unique satisfaction is also something that is personally measured. In my clinical experience when patients try Zestra they move up on the scale towards the “great” level. Women who said their orgasms were weak are now reporting improvement, and they also report decreased time to achieve orgasm. Overall, in the clinical scenario and with my patients it’s been shown to be helpful.

Q: If a woman has success with Zestra, does it increase the possibility that she will have sexual satisfaction without the product?

A: Zestra can enhance the sexual experience and promote wellness in the relationship; it can be used as an add-on to sexual activity. Certainly sexual happiness and sexual satisfaction as well as intimacy and love are dynamic complex interactions for the couple—women’s sexual improvement can directly and indirectly affect a variety of facets in her overall health and functioning.

Q: What are the benefits, besides happiness, of sexual satisfaction in a woman?

A: Improved sexual function and positive intimate relationships have been linked to improvements in overall health, wellness, decreased disease, decreased medication requirements, lowered stress and decreased chronic medical disease. Those who have some positive sexual connections and increased intimacy can expect to live longer happier lives—sexual hormones can boost immunity, promote longevity and in some cases have been linked with lowered rates of depression and anxiety.

Q: Are there any side effects to using Zestra?

A: Using Zestra has been demonstrated to be safe in clinical trials. No serious side effects have been reported, but as stated above, some women may find the tingly or warming sensation discomforting. Zestra should not be used if you have any active infection, genital infection or local irritation.

You can visit Zestra’s website at Zestra for more information about how to order.

If you’re like most women, you probably spent part of yesterday making food, watching kids, and entertaining guests, all while trying to sit down and have a (somewhat) healthy meal yourself. Now that the festivities for the 4th of July are over, you probably feel like kicking back and doing nothing today. And you should. But there are also a few other things you should do.

Take a Walk

Women are often the ones that encourage other family members to get out and exercise. Today, do yourself and your family a favor by suggesting a walk. The kids can ride along on their bikes if they want, but have your family take a stroll around your neighborhood. It doesn’t have to be power walking, just brisk enough where you each get some exercise while still enjoying each other’s company.

Go Easy on Dinner

It’s the end of a busy weekend, so take a break from making a traditional dinner by having something quick and light. Try cereal or sandwiches instead of a heavy meal.

Play a Board Game

Board games are a great way for families to bond. The kids will enjoy interacting with their parents, and might even appreciate a break from video games. Parents will get a much-needed break from TV.

Call Up a Pal

Talking with a friend is a surefire way to reduce stress. Call up a long lost pal and gab about your weekend. Take the phone in a room and shut the door to really make it time out just for you.

A migraine is defined as “the flashing lights, a certain smell, or other sights or sounds that can signal oncoming pain.” Research suggests that the more frequent your migraines, the greater the risk.

Five percent of women had migraines once a week or more. These women were “four times as likely to have had a stroke” as women without migraines.

So if you are having troubles sleeping at night, they advice eating something that is “light but high-carbohydrate snacks” because they increase your natural level of serotonin. Snacks like:

• Half of a whole-wheat English muffin or raisin bagel drizzled with honey
• Two cups of air-popped popcorn
• A small slice of angel food cake topped with berries
• A frozen whole-wheat waffle, toasted, with maple syrup
• Half a cup of pretzels

are the perfect choice for a pre-bedtime munch. They’ll help you sleep but not make you so full you’ll get indigestion.

Well Jessica Terry, an 18-year old student from Washington was in her Advanced Placement high school science class and looking at her own tissue slides. Terry had been suffering from terrible stomach pain that “brought her to her knees. The pain, along with diarrhea, vomiting and fever, made her so sick, she lost weight and often had to miss school.”

She took the same tissue that her doctor said was perfectly normal, and examined it under the microscope. She saw “an area of inflamed tissue” which she sent to her doctor, and has now been diagnosed as Crohn’s disease.

The kid found her own disease. The one her doctor’s couldn’t find.

Pretty amazing. Terry will be going to nursing school in fall, and she’s also written a children’s book about Crohn’s disease.

They have just been awarded the first year of the $11.5 million federal grant. The vaginal microbiome can be affected by things such as vaginosis, sexually transmitted disease, viral infections such as HPV or even HIV-1, as well as normal (healthy) events like pregnancy. Studies of this kind are being done throughout the country, and will help to better understand women’s health issues. It could mean the development of drugs or therapies to keep women healthy and protect them from certain diseases.

If there is nothing in your community, the groups meet when you’re at work, or you live too far from an organized community, you might want to check out online support groups. Also, by reading blogs about Alzheimer’s caregiving and leaving comments that the blogger and other readers might answer, you’ll feel more connected with the caregiver community and not so alone.

What suggestions do you have? Are there particular caregiver groups/organizations you find particularly helpful.
