Would You Telecommute for Less Pay?

We talked about telecommuting a lot here at Career and Kids. At least once a week I get an email from someone asking me about it. Some want to know where the telecommuting jobs are. Some ask me what the future of telecommuting will be.
I saw this interesting article which talked about telecommuting, and one of the things it mentioned was that employees are NOT willing to take a pay cut if they can work from home. The article said:
“Sixty-one percent of employed respondents who are not currently working remotely are unwilling …read more

We talk a lot about telecommuting here, and for good reason.  It’s a hot issue in workplaces today as the economic world changes and offices don’t look quite the same as they used to.
I hear from a lot of you with questions about telecommuting.  Many people, it seems, are trying to do their best with just making an income while still maintaining family life.  As this trend continues, so will the amount of telecommuters.  I caught this article recently and the …read more

Getting Creative for the Sake of Childcare

Looks like I’m not the only one with childcare on my mind.  A recent news article says, “Next to rent or mortgage payments, child care ranks as the second-highest expense in a household budget.”  The article goes on to offer suggestions on how to reduce the costs of childcare.
Childcare is one reason I’m looking for ways to work at home, and we don’t even have kids yet!  I know I’m not alone.  Everyone parent I know is constantly looking for ways to keep their childcare costs in check.  One of my friends cut her schedule, another telecommuntes one day a …read more

Work at Home Call Centers

I’m always looking for work-at-home opportunities, so lately I’ve become very interested in a few companies that hire work-at-home employees for call center jobs.  I first became aware of these types of jobs through an article I read on MSN Money.
For years we’ve been hearing about call center jobs that get sent to another country.  Recently, however, employers have stated a preference in having their calls handled within the United States to avoid language barriers or time delays.  I think this is an interesting development in the work-at-home movement.
Companies such as Alpine Access and Live Opps have gained popularity and pay …read more

Monitoring home based workers

Many workers, parents and non-parents alike, enjoy work-at-home arrangements with their employers.
I’ve never worked from home, so I don’t know how such arrangements are monitored, but an article in the Wall Street Journal shed some light on the current trend of electronically monitoring home based workers:
They’re taking photos of workers’ computer screens at random, counting keystrokes and mouse clicks and snapping photos of them at their computers. They’re plying sophisticated technology to instantaneously detect anger, raised voices or children crying in the background on workers’ home-office calls.
I’m not sure what I think about this.
On one hand, it’s certainly within …read more
