I Don’t Need ‘Cute Workout Clothes’ To Motivate Me

I Don't Need 'Cute Workout Clothes' To Motivate Me

The other day, Huffington Post ran a short piece titled “Cute Workout Clothes Are The Key To Getting You Off The Couch And To The Gym.” Now, while I have no qualms with the idea that many people find workout clothes to be a way of feeling good while exercising and therefore a motivator of sorts, I’ve finally gotten to the point where, when I exercise, I feel okay looking like — well, a bit of a mess. And that’s the way I like it. More »

Plank: The Yoga Mat With The Best Sense of Humor Ever

Plank: The Yoga Mat With The Best Sense of Humor Ever

I really like yoga and meditating, and I’ve even become one of those people who OMs really loudly in my yoga classes. I even own (and read) a couple of books by Thich Nhat Hahn; I’m seeking what some consider majorly cheesy spiritual enlightenment. (I draw the line at incense, though; I can’t go around smelling like an ashram, folks.) But I also appreciate a sense of humor, which is why when I spotted Plank’s yoga gear, I instantly had to shift around my spending priorities and find a way to cough up $95 for my fifth (yes, fifth) yoga mat. They make an assortment of lovely printed, eco-friendly, all-natural rubber mats, but my favorite one is the one that looks like a bathroom floor scattered with pills. It’s kind of dark; it’s really funny. It’s even better than those Fish’s Eddy Pills dishes. More »

Motivational Retail: Things That Make Me Excited for Spring Running

Motivational Retail: Things That Make Me Excited for Spring Running

I went on my first outdoor run in months this morning; we’ve had sporadic spring weather so far, and while I’ve been telling myself and everyone else that I’m just “very into yoga” lately, the reality is that I’m also “too lazy to run.” I’m slightly motivated by the pending doom that is bikini season (and the fact that 90 degrees in New York sounds a lot more comfortable without a layer of blubber to insulate), but that will only last so long. What I really need is some new merch to make me stick with a spring running routine. If I had a financial adviser, I’m sure they’d tell me this is a bad fiscal strategy, and if I had a personal trainer, they might also tell me that I’m putting the cart before the horse. But screw the experts, I know: Sometimes all baby needs to get her workouts back on track is a really pretty tank top, and the guilt trip of having spend $60 on clothing that can only be worn at the gym. Are you with me? More »

7 Ways to Lighten Your Gym Load: Workout Gear That Won’t Destroy Your Back

7 Ways to Lighten Your Gym Load: Workout Gear That Won't Destroy Your Back

Spring means time to hit the gym and get back in shape before summer, but heavy gym bags don’t make it very fun. In fact, we’ll be honest: Carrying all our stuff around the city sucks so much that sometimes, we just don’t do it, which means we aren’t really getting to the gym. Between the clothes, shoes, makeup, toiletries, and equipment we have to lug around, we can easily feel like nomads, which is a) not the look we’re going for and b) not a good way to treat our backs and shoulders. We want to get our exercise at the gym, not hauling around our workout gear. More »

Gym Rant: Fitness Fashion 101

Gym Rant: Fitness Fashion 101

For a place that’s covered in mirrors, there seem to be a lot of people who don’t know what they look like at the gym. How else can I explain the athletic wardrobe atrocities? I get it — the gym is not a fashion show. I’m there to sweat, not show off, but for the sake of my fellow gym goers, I do make sure that my exercise ensemble fits, covers the appropriate body parts, and doesn’t smell like it’s been in my hamper since high school. Unfortunately, some gym goers lack my consideration, making my workouts are both physically grueling and visually damaging. If your exercise garb falls into any of the following categories, it’s time for a serious workout wardrobe revise. I want my muscles to be sore, not my eyes: More »
