A Future With Autism

There’s a video out on the web now called Autism Yesterday, echoing the title of another video that appeared in 2006, Autism Every Day. The latter video by director Lauren Thierry strove to present “what it’s like” for families to live with a child for autism. The other video, “Autism Yesterday,” presents the message that “autism is reversible” via biomedical interventions; autism could become a thing of yesterday if families chose to use such treatments (many of which we have used for my son, when he was younger).

Does Your Child Know That It’s Autism Awareness Month?

A few days ago I asked does your child know that he or she is autistic?—-and now, after Wednesday’s World Autism Day and April being Autism Awareness Month, here’s another question in the same vein:
Does your autistic child know that Wednesday was World Autism Day and that this whole month is Autism Awareness Month?
I don’t like to speak on behalf of Charlie but have a few thoughts on this particular topic. First, no, he’s not particularly aware that Wednesday or this month are focused on him or, rather, on what he “has.” Charlie hardly needs to be aware of autism. …read more

Writes Kerry Cohen, whose son Ezra has been diagnosed with PDD-NOS, in What’s Wrong With This Picture?: My autistic son doesn’t need to be fixed in Babble:
But if I am only able to do one thing for him as I usher him through childhood, it will be this: I will protect him from anyone who might make him feel that he is somehow not perfect.
