It doesn’t take long for the cost of Halloween decorations and costumes to add up. Although it may not seem like it, Halloween is just around the corner. Here are some tips to save.

1) Check out the selection at close out stores. One year my husband stopped in a close out store and found Spiderman and Backyardigans costumes for only $5 each. Those costumes would have cost us at least $40. The kids were thrilled!
2) Borrow from a friend. Check with your friends to see if anyone has any costume pieces that you can borrow. Sometimes you can borrow enough for a whole costume or enough to where you just have to buy a few things.
3) Purchase unisex costumes for kids. This was easier when my kids were younger. One year my daughter dressed in a Disney Pooh Bear costume. Another year she wore a pumpkin costume. My younger son was able to use both of these costumes when he got older.
Stay tuned for part 2 of ways to save on Halloween. What ways do you save?

Hi Karen,
I find that people get rid of two main things during their Summer/Fall garage sales – Christmas decorations and Halloween decorations and costumes.
As for Halloween, it’s mainly because the kids don’t go out anymore at all.
What I like mostly about Thanksgiving and Halloween being so close in Canada
is that the decorations outside, ie scarecrows, gourds, pumpkins, straw bales etc. are so appropriate and cover both occasions and the Autumn season in
general as well. That is a great savings as well.
Hi Jane. Thanks for commenting. You’re so right! That is one of the top 10 Halloween tips to be featured later this week.
It’s amazing all the things you can find at yard sales. When I moved, I had a whole table of nothing but holiday decorations for sale.
I’ve run out of my stash of candy I’ve bought on discount and am now facing buying candy for normal retail prices. How do you save on candy?
Hi Katie. Thanks for commenting. Stay tuned, we’ll cover some candy saving tips this week.
I saved all of my son’s costumes. I also buy things at garage sales and get discount fabric to make my own. I made a tunic and cape for my son and he wore it two years ago along with a sword we bought him to play with. Then last year I turned it into a jedi costume since I had bought him a lightsabre at a garage sale. My daughter is wearing the tiger costume my son wore on his second halloween. I’m using the tunic again this year to make him a pirate costume. I bought him the pirate hat last year after halloween.
Karen- Pooh Bear is not unisex, he is a very manly bear! The Carebears are unisex and we have a blue Carebear costume that has been circulating between the 3 youngest of our 5 kids (2 boys and a girl). They also all shared the froggy baby costume!
Pooh Bear is manly? You must be talking about Yogi Bear. hahaha Seriously though, the Pooh Bear costume was actually Pooh Bear dressed up like a Bumble Bee. It was really cute. Care Bears on the other hand, I’m not so sure about. I have a friend whose mom dressed him as a Care Bear when he was little. He still gets teased about it.
One way to save money on the goodies that you are giving away is to give just ONE instead of the handful that’s become the norm.
Giving away one (of whatever it is) means less resources, less waste, less consumed and less money spent.
