$30 DIY Bike Cargo Trailer

Here’s an awesome build tutorial from Instructables.com on how to build your own bicycle cargo trailer using 1/2″ EMT conduit, scavenged bicycle wheels and some plywood for the cargo bed. The author of the piece was able to construct it with materials that only cost him about $30, but if you’re a scrounger with metal recycling dumpsters or a building reno nearby, it can be done for less.
The end product – with hitch, plywood, and wheels – weighs in at around 25 lbs and will comfortably and safely carry 200 lbs of load. You could go as high as 450 lbs with this unit if you’re careful and don’t have any formidable hills along your route.
I live on the outskirks of a small town and I’m often frustrated by the fact that it’s too far to walk comfortably with a load of groceries, yet I hate taking the truck to go a mere 2 miles. This is such a simple and elegant solution, not to mention the fact that the price is right.
The build tutorial for this project is awesomely detailed with very thorough explainations, clear drawings and even a couple of videos. If you’re so inclined, it’s well worth a look. Check it out Instructables.com.
