A great way to stop junk mail

I got an email yesterday about how to stop junk mail and I thought it was a great idea so I wanted to share it with you.
Then I went to snopes.com and found out that it wasn’t true so I’m not going to go into detail about the falsehoods. But in doing so, I got some great websites to go to to decrease your incoming telemarketing and junk mail efforts. So here they are.
- Go to the Do Not Call Registry and get your name taken off the list to receive telemarketing calls. It does work because I noticed a huge decrease in the number of calls I got once I put our name and number on the list. You can tell any telemarketer to take your name off their list and that you are on the DNC list and it makes it illegal for them to call you again. It will take a few months but it is worth it!
- Go to the Mail Preference Service and get your name taken off a huge list of junk mail options to help reduce your amount of junk mail. This will help save tons of trees if you are environmentally conservative.
- Go to OptOutPrescreen to get your credit to become off limits for pre-approved credit card offers. I hate my credit information being so easily accessed.
So save some time going through the mail by decreasing the amount you get. Hope this helps.
Thanks for that. Its great to know that there are real ways to tackle this problem instead of sending all of my random junk mail back to credit card companies with their pre-paid envelopes.
You have to pay $1 to get your name removed from direct mail marketing? I know it’s only $1, but it still burns me up. So then I either have to pay by check and mail a form, or give them my credit card for $1!!!!????
Ahhh… never mind. You provide your CC (which i still don’t like to do) for identity verification, at which point a temporary charge MAY appear on your statement.
I give the kids our junk mail which they use for their craft activities, such as colouring and cutting.
Can anyone else think of great ways to recycle this troublesome and unwanted mail?

I love the arts and crafts idea! Of course I don’t have kids yet but I’ll keep that in mind, thanks. In the meantime, there are several websites out there that make it easy to take your name off of a bunch of lists at once. Some are free, others you have to pay for the service but they plant trees or donate a portion of the proceeds to environmental organizations. ProQuo.com and CatalogChoice.com are both free and stop junk mail and catalogs. GreenDimes.com charges $20 but plants 10 trees. I’m partial to ProQuo, 1 because its free and 2 because I work for them! Honestly though, there are at least half a dozen websites that offer the same type of service. I registered for ProQuo, CatalogChoice and recently with GreenDimes. It takes a while but it really does work. I registered back in November and I finally started seeing a difference in the amount of junk mail I get a couple of weeks ago.
