Can you barter for health care?

You can barter and haggle for all sorts of goods at garage sales, shops, flea markets, and so on. Really there are loads of places you can haggle and or barter, but for bartering for health care? It sounds crazy but a piece at CNN Money notes that some rouge bartering individuals are trying just that.

The piece open with one Bob Viking, a party supply store owner who has managed to recently barter for dental surgery, among other health care. In fact, Viking is currently working on a barter for employee health care coverage. Wow. It may seem nutty but CNN points out that “Business owners with an eye toward cutting costs are increasingly viewing bartering as a viable option for obtaining medical services for themselves and their employees.”
A second piece about this technique notes that “Historically, evidence shows that when the economy is not doing well, people look for alternate sources of income.” and thus, bartering makes sense.
It makes sense, if you have something to barter. If not, you’ll still be without health care by conventional or bartering means. To me that’s the downside. The government has even recognized that bartering for health care can work, but of course, if you’re without services or goods to trade, you’re sunk and may need other resources.
