Can you become a freegan?

Oprah had a video on her site about freegans and a trash tour.  I think the freegan life is the ultimate free life style.  But I have a confession to make, I could never do it!  There is something about digging into the trash that just grosses me out!  I know what is in my trash and I can’t see myself sticking my hands, even with gloves, in someone else’s trash just to find food.

So does that make me a louse or less frugal than them?  How about that investment banker?  What do you think of him?

I found the lifestyle to be pretty hardcore, but found it really great that stuff that was being wasted was being used. I am with you though, digging in a dumpster would not appeal to me at all. If the stuff was sitting out for the taking…sure, but no diving ;)

Totally not for me…but after watching that show….more power to ‘em! I mean, we waste sooo much in this country. If someone wants/can make use of stuff that will just end up in a landfill, then dig away. Again not for me though, I can’t even read library books, they give me the heebie jeebies, can’t imagine digging through a dumpster. And I’m the most frugal person I know so it’s not a matter of being not cheap enough ;)

BBCAmerica has a new reality show starting Sunday called Dumped. 11 contestants have to live in the dump only living off of what people throw away. It looks quite interesting!

I think I could, if I had a community of people that did it with us. Especially going to the supermarkets right after they closed. I remember once hearing of a poor family getting bread out of the dumpster, and the grocery finding out and pouring bleach on it before it could be taken. Something about it being illegal to knowingly let anyone consume it. What a shame. So wasteful.

    That’s horrible!
