Cheap Decorating Ideas

All of the decorating shows on television lately have spawned a home improvement craze. The best part is, most of these decorating tips are for inexpensive design, and who among us isn’t interested in that? Now I know nothing about the art of interior design, but I do know a couple of things about saving money. Since our home is a work in progress, I’m slowly learning a bit about inexpensive decorating as well. In most cases, a room doesn’t need a major renovation in order to be updated, a few inexpensive decorating ideas might be in order instead. Below are a few cheap decorating tips:

Paint – Sometimes all a room needs is a new coat of paint. Pre-mixed colors are less expensive than having a designer color made up, and if the colors are discontinued, they’re even cheaper. In addition to looking for paint sales, ask your home improvement store or hardware shop owners if they have discontinued color cans of paint languishing in a back room and offer to take them off their hands at a discount.

Furniture – Sometimes moving furniture around gives a room a whole new perspective. Instead of lining couches, chairs and tables along walls, group them conversationally in the center of the room. If the furniture is outdated or showing signs of wear, invest in an inexpensive throw or have the furniture slip covered.

Pillows – To give couches and chairs a warm, cozy feel add some contrasting throw pillows. Check discount stores, thrift shops, or make your own. Pillows are incredibly easy to make and patterns can be found online and in the library.

Plants - Plants also add warmth and light to a room, plus they’re relatively inexpensive. Check your local garden center for sales.

Art work – Art work doesn’t have to be a major investment. Try making your own. Find pictures you like in books, magazines or calendars and put them in a frame. Look for coffee table type books featuring works by a favorite artist or photographer and make copies of your favorites. Frame children’s artwork for a special touch or blow up scenic photographs.

There are many sources for inexpensive decorating. In addition to thrift shops, check consignment shops, garage sales, craft sales, online auction sites, freecycle, and flea markets. Try neighborhood bulk trash night for furniture that can be easily restored. If you remember that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and approach this with an open mind, you’re sure to find a gem or two. Check with friends and relatives to see if anyone has items in the attic they wouldn’t mind parting with.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to change the appearance of a room. Inspiration is everywhere; you just have to be willing to look in a few unconventional places.
