If I can't pay for it in cash, I don't buy it. As for the big ticketed items like airline tickets, I will put them on the credit card if I don't have enough cash in the checking account and then pay it off as quickly as I can. I tend to be a no-credit person myself. I actually used Dave Ramsey's method to get down to only having a mortgage.
