Do you give away or sell?

Karen has shared her wonderful yard sale experience with you.  We have journeyed through her ups and downs and have enjoyed celebrating with her success.  But I have a question for you …

I have often said that I have been blessed with many hand-me-downs for the kids.  I don’t know what I would have done if I had to buy all my kids’ clothes.  So here is my question, once you are done with your kid stuff, what do you do with it all?  I have mixed my dilemma with the fact that I have several friends that have just had new babies or are going to have new babies.  So I have offered to sell them some of my baby stuff for what the used baby store would have given me.  This is right around yard sale price but still cheaper than if they had bought it.  But sometimes I feel guilty for not just giving it to them.   So am I right or wrong?  I was gifted a lot of stuff but I have bought a lot too. I am really struggling with some of this.  Some things I have loaned out to be returned if we have another baby.  Some I have given and some I have started to sell.

So the question is … do you give away your baby stuff and bless someone else or do you sell most of it and then give away what is left over that no one wants to buy?

I sell and consign what I can and then give away the rest (which is a lot!!!!). If someone comes along with a need before I can sell it, then I give things to them.

BTW Kelly, I had my yard sales and I have a bunch of clothes here. heehee Too bad you don’t live closer.

Why do you have to be mean like that!?

  3. I give away things. Due to the nature of my work (parenting writing) and the generosity of family & friends my kids have SO much. It makes me happy to be able to give things away.

I usually give all my clothes away to someone else. I too have been blessed beyond belief with clothes for my little ones. I love to pay it forward. If it is “items” like seats or toys etc. I will attempt to sell them at a yard sale and then pack the rest up for charity!

I give my son’s stuff away. We aren’t planning on another child, and my neighbor’s cousin is REALLY poor and could use it, so I send it next door to be delivered to the cousin. We’re blessed, and because I get such good deals, I don’t feel bad about giving it away! :)

  6. Carol B. says:

I donate everything my kids out grow to charity.
In my town you have to have to get a permit from city hall to have a garage sale. And, I refuse to pay for a permit. Which I think is stupid.

I almost always donate either to a shelter, the thrift store that is run by a shelter here in town, or pass to people with kids smaller than mine.

I’ve been blessed to receive a lot of hand me downs for the kids and so I try to pass that blessing on.

I consign a lot of my kids clothes (and search yard sales for more to consign for a profit!). I also feel guilty about selling my 2.5-year-old and 1.5-year-old’s clothing rather than give it away to friends, but we really need the money since I am a SAHM. I do try to give away what I can when it’s not in pristine condition, though. Your dilemma really hit home for me. I get it!

We’ve been given almost all of our baby clothes; when it’s time to get rid of them, I’m sure we’ll just give them away to someone else. Things we bought we might consider selling, but if it was given to us, I don’t feel right selling it.

  10. Michelle says:

Both – I have sold most of the clothes – $1.00 per item or less & made enough from 3 years of baby/toddler clothes to buy all the clothes I needed for the boys for the next year or two, depending on sales.

If someone needs an item I have, I often give it away. I gave away the swings, baby swings, car seat, baby gates because I found someone who needed it. I think it depends on the person/situation. (If I know you CANNOT afford it, it is always a gift)

Well, we have been blessed with great friends and family whom have given us great items over the years, so my belief is to pay it forward as well.

I tried selling my kid/baby stuff at a resale shop and got so little for what they took. I now give it to my friends who have little ones or are due any time now. I even gave my best friend our crib and changing dresser since they have some money issues. Besides I love her!!!!

  12. Brandy says:

I was lucky…my best friend and I were pregnant with both our kids at the same time and best of all, we had opposite sex kids each time! After I was done with baby clothes from my boy, I saved them for her boy and she did the same from her baby girl clothes.
Now, I am left with LOTS of baby girl items and I am in the same boat. I have decided to keep all green/yellow/neutral items–just in case–and try to sell the girl items at garage sale price to people who I know who need cheap items. I’m still not sure what to do with the rest…they are consignment name brands and too good for giveaways.

  13. Heather says:

If I have been given most ofwhat the child outgrew – I just pass it down an trust that God will bless us with what we need. He always has.

  14. Cecille says:

I received so much when I had my daughter. In fact, between loaners and baby showers, I had virtually nothing to buy for her. I was truly blessed. I was at the end of a real baby boom at my work, so I got more clothes and other stuff than I could ever use. I give the outgrown clothes away unless they’re something special I was to keep. I’ve passed them on to other new moms at work, but more often I take them to the day care and let folks there look through them. They all get taken in short order.

  15. Briana says:

I usually sell on ebay or rummage sales. I have a hard time finding people who are the same size as my kids who want our stuff!
