It’s not summer, but ice cream is still making its way to your freezer I’m guessing. With the holidays coming ice cream is the perfect easy dessert and can be used in all sorts of dessert creations or used as a side to pie. With that in mind, you should know how to get the biggest bang for your ice cream buck.

Go organic!: Dairy is a food category loaded with icky growth hormones and pesticides, and ice cream, being a dairy product is included here. Organic ice cream is more beneficial because it’s made with organic milk. Now all that is good and well, but organic ice cream can cost more (although for you health it could cost less in the long run). You can save on this frozen treat by one, locating a local or store name brand organic ice cream or make it yourself. If you want to try your hand at making homemade organic ice cream check out the following links… NOTE – I posted a couple non-organic links, simply switch out the ingredients for organic.

  • Keep your freezer at the same full capacity. When your freezer it full, empty, full, empty, it results in temperature changes that can thaw and refreeze ice cream which changes the texture and sometimes taste.
  • Technically you should always keep ice cream packed tight to keep it at its freshest which means after you eat some, you switch it to a smaller freezer safe container with a tight lid. However, if you have time to switch ice cream containers every time you eat some, well, maybe you’d like to come clean my house or something. That is time intensive. You can get semi same results by pressing a sheet of plastic wrap over the uneaten portion.
  • Never leave ice cream out to thaw. You should use a good scoop that’s been warmed in hot water. Again, thawing changes the taste and texture.
  • The National Dairy Council notes that “To avoid crystallization and volume loss, scoop ice cream, keeping the surface as level as possible.
