Financial Peace is on the Way

debt freeTonight at church we began our Financial Peace University classes.  This is a series by Dave Ramsey.  I am excited about the things we will be learning from the classes.  Of course I can’t share everything that I am learning, but I can give you some pointers.  Until then, I have a question I’d like your comments on:

Why do you think Americans have so much debt?

I look forward to your responses.

I got this from Dave Ramsey’s website.  It will give you something to think about:

Debt is dumb. Most normal people are just plain broke because they are in debt up to their eyeballs with no hope of help. If you’re in debt then you’re a slave, in the sense that you do not have the freedom to use your money to help change your family tree. According to a recent USA Today article about debt, 78 percent of baby boomers have mortgage debt, 59 percent have credit card debt, 56 percent have car payments.

It takes a lot of will, discipline, courage and help to slay the debt monster. But it can be done. Imagine how much you could put toward retirement if you just didn’t have a stinking car payment? This is how the wealthy build their wealth. Debt is really dumb. Welcome to the real world! Start your Total Money Makeover Now.

  1. Gayla McCord says:

Americans are in debt because we are a society of excuses. We can create an excuse to make any purchase on credit! People aren’t thinking in the long term either. Our economy isn’t good at all! So many jobs are being lost and the income is not there to support the debt.

I don’t have a credit card and won’t have one. If I can’t pay cash for it, I don’t get it.

I struggled for 5 years to get myself out of debt following a bad divorce and the ex filing bankruptcy on his debts – I’ll never go back there again.

I am very interested though in what you think of the course. I’ve always watch Ramsey from a distance and wondered if he wasn’t just another high caliber sales pitch business that doesn’t really offer anything that’s not common sense.

That’s awesome that you are taking that class. I have heard such good things. My husband and I are hard at work on our Total Money Makeover.

    Best of luck!

  3. Jodi says:

He doesn’t claim to be offering anything but common sense. But sometimes it just helps to hear it in convincing way.

  4. Karen says:

He’s offering some common sense with some things mixed in that we haven’t thought of before. I wish I had taken this class before I got married. I certainly would be a lot better off.

  5. Taking that class was one of the best things my wife and I did right after we got married. Two years now without a credit card. I am a recovering credit addict…
