Fix your home appliance instead of tossing it

As noted previously, I LOVE my blender. If it died, well, worse things could happen, but I’d be pretty darn upset. Also, to make matters worse, I’d have to fork over money for a new blender. Or maybe not.

At the Gourmet Depot, there’s a handy little tool you can use to find and order spare parts for all sorts of kitchen gadgets. This is great say, if you break a coffee pot, or your blades on your blender get bent out of shape. You can find parts for just about every home appliance there is, and they make it easy by allowing you to look by appliance, manufacturer, or type of part you need.

So, the next time something breaks around the house, see if one spare part might do the trick. This is usually better for your wallet, and always better for the earth then tossing old appliances away.

This is great to know. I’ve used http://www.repairclinic.com for ordering parts for large appliances (like my frig and dryer) but I wasn’t aware there was a place for small appliances.

The other great thing about repairclinic.com is they have a lot of instructions on repairing appliances as well as extending the life of appliances.

    Thanks for the great tips.

Except maybe really old dishwashers? I fixed my old one twice under the homeowner’s insurance with a deductible. Then one day it flooded the kitchen because the bottom had rusted out!

So, I got a nice stainless steel Maytag that the current owners are now loving while I have a cheap apt dishwasher. But hey, at least I left them a present. :)

@Laura I didn’t know about that site; I’ll have to check it out.

@Peggy well, some things are worth replacing – if say, you’ll save energy, water, and resources, it might be time to replace.
