Frugal Challenge Saturday – Grocery Shopping

I know that without a shadow of a doubt, if my DH goes to the grocery store any way but on a full stomach, he spends way more than needed.  So the Frugal Challenge for Saturday is to plan your shopping trips.  Here are some tips to save money while shoppingl.

  • Never go to the grocery store hungry.
  • Plan a list and stick to it.
  • Keep your eyes above eye level.  The impulsive buying items are strategically placed at eye level.  And don’t be fooled.  That is not just for the check out isle either.
  • Look down to the lowest level in the grocery isle.  That is usually where they place the generic or store brand foods.  Thatusually saves you around 20%.
  • Spend the money and get a Sunday paper.  The coupons alone will save you enough to justify the expenditure.

So there you have it.  Grocery shopping is the number 1 frugal challenge in our household.  I do great with clothing and household items but the grocery bill (Wal-Mart) kills me!

  1. Hi- Your comment at the end about Wal-mart inspired my post today on my Smart Not Cheap blog
http://www.smartnotcheap.blogspot.com – actually I just rehashed some comments between The Mommy Blogger & I regarding Wal-Mart and threw up some links back to your blog. Wal-Mart does not save families money overall- it gets them to overspend time and money.

  2. Bellen says:

My local grocery store puts their brand next to the name brand items – easy to check price and ingredients/nutritional values. Has saved me lots – besides, I buy the same boxed/canned items all the time – only the fresh produce/meats change according to what’s on sale.

I have the aisles memorized in the grocery store I use. It helps get me in and out quicker, but also keeps me from going down aisles that are not needed.
