I was watching the new Rachael Ray Show today. I rarely get to watch tv, so I did not know Rachael Ray had a new show, but I’m glad I found it. I could certainly use the frugal hair care tips that Jessica shared.
Here are Jessica’s tips for curly and straight hair:
A curly-headed person’s worst enemy is the frizz. Here’s how Jessi keeps the enemy far away:
- Applying styling products when your hair is soaking wet. Keep a spray bottle with water nearby so that if your hair gets even a little dry, you can wet it again.
- “Scrunch” curls to dry them instead of rubbing your scalp with a towel.
- Never use a brush. For wavy hair, use a wide-tooth comb in the shower while your hair is saturated with conditioner.
- Use a microfiber towel instead of terrycloth. “Terrycloth is the anti-best friend for curls,” she says, “and wrapping it up in that turban can make your curls all wonky and weird. A microfiber towel absorbs water without making your hair frizzy.”
- Sleep on a satin or silk pillow. “Your hair pulls across it and the cotton actually sucks moisture out of your hair,” she explains. Satin and silk pillowcases will also help get your hair softer and keep frizz at bay.
- Master the “plunk” (See video on site.)
A lot of straight-haired people ask how they can get more volume. Some of her suggestions include:
- Spritz on a mixture of Epsom salt and water: Jessi recommends mixing 1 teaspoon of Epsom salt per 8 ounces of water in a spritz bottle (any more might dry out your hair and make it brittle). After spritzing, style as usual. “The #1 ingredient in all of the new “beachy” hair products is Epsom salt… There’s something in the way Epsom salt reacts with your hair,” she says. “You can comb it out if you want it to be straight or you can scrunch it up if you want it to be wavy.” Great “beach” hair without all that sand? Sold!
- Rinse your hair upside down in the shower. Instead of standing upright where the water beats down on your hair, bend over and let it cascade over it, pulling it away from your scalp. “It gets it off your scalp and gives it some volume,” Jessi says. “If you blow-dry upside down, it gives even more volume!”

I have curly hair that can really frustrate me! Thanks for the tips.
Wow! Didn’t know that! Curly hair rules by the way
Kelly, I thought of you when I posted this.
I don’t care whether it’s straight or if it’s curly . . . I just want some volume!!!!
Thanks alot. My rat’s nest can use alot of help.
I hate frizzy hair, So thanks for the great tips on how to ease it. I have a tip on adding volume. I just purchased a ceramic diffuser (you stick it on the end of your hair dryer)and it gives your hair volume and it looks great!! It really works wonders. Visit my blog for an awesome Beauty Tool I came across that helps you choose the right dye for your hair.
