How do you get the urine smell out of clothes?

I have a 2 year old that is potty training and sometimes, I get clothes back from the sitter that smell of urine.  Then sometimes, I don’t know that there are clothes in the plastic bag or they fall out of her bag and get hidden for a few days until I start smelling them.

I was afraid I would never get that smell out of one of my fave outfits for her.  So I tried everything after I found a bag of clothes from a day last week.  I have no idea how I missed those clothes from her bag that had fallen under the seat.  So after trying all kinds of combinations of color safe bleach, Oxy Clean, vinegar, and Dreft, I called Karen and she and I came up with …

I found the magic concoction.  All you need to take that urine smell out is a big bowl, water, vinegar, and baking soda.  I use liberal amounts of baking soda, maybe 1 cup or a little less, and at least 2 cups of vinegar and then enough water to cover the clothes.  If you want to, add a scoop of Oxy Clean for good measure.  Let the clothes soak for several hours outside in the sun.  Then rinse and wash.  The smell has always come out with this mixture.  And I have really put it to the test as one whole set of clothes were washed, soaked, dried, and redone before I added the baking soda to the mix.  Hope this helps.

I just received an awesome email about all the possibilities of peroxide. You could try that!!! Peroxide and baking soda.

It works great for removing blood. I am working on a post for all the ways to use peroxide. Stay tuned.

This is good to know since Baby Bug is about to start potty training. I’m sure we’ll have our share of accidents!

I’ve used vinegar in the washing machine, and it has worked for me. I put it in the bleach dispenser.

We use borax but sometimes I have to wash them twice. Maybe soaking them in borax and laundry detergent.

I just pour a small amount (depending on the load size) of Amonia along with the detergent in and it kills that horrible smell….if it continues to linger re-wash and pour a little more of the amonia in…it has worked wonders on my daughters favorite blankies and bedding : )
