How Do You Save on Furniture?

We have been married for 14 years and we have never owned new living room furniture. Not ever. Through the years, we have purchased used furniture from friends and borrowed some from my parents. Finally, this year I was determined to buy a new set . . . until I saw my neighbor’s new furniture for sale. He only wanted $100 for his one-year-old Lane recliner couch that he never sat on and $100 for the one-year-old leather recliner. Of course, I bought it. How could I possibly pay over $1400 for a new set when I could get his for $200?
Last year I was at a yard sale and spotted some oak living room furniture. It came with a tv stand, two end table/cabinets, and a bench type coffee table. The lady told me she paid over $1000 for the set and I got them for $125. Our bedroom furniture is my husband’s furniture from when he was a kid. It’s solid wood. He just sanded it and refinished it to make it look new again. My kitchen table was purchased from a junk store. It is an old oak farmhouse style table with lots of marks and dings on it. It has a lot of character. I only paid $35 for it and I get lots of compliments on it from others.
If I recall correctly, the only new furniture we have is a bunk bed set that I purchased from Big Lots. Truthfully though, if I were going to buy new furniture, I’d spend my money on antiques.
How do you save money on furniture? Do you buy used furniture or do you look for sales on new furniture?

I save furniture by taking care of it.
Used is the only way to go – better quality and different! I have some great pieces!
There is a wonderful Christian thrift store where I have found some quality used furniture.
I have a friend whose uncle redecorates a room in his home every year and every piece of “old” furniture goes to family and friends, if anything is left over it’s donated. (And yes, he’s gay.)
we totally shopped at yard sales for things that could be covered, painted or refinished.. and outfitted an apartment relatively inexpensively
Craigslist, thriftstores, garage sales, newspaper, and IKEA!
we usually get our furniture from thrift stores or from other family members. It’s new to us! hahaha!
I have purchased a lot of my furniture at auctions and found some nice items at great prices. Thanks for the contest!
I check out resale shops.
I also hit the garage sales. I love sanding and painting and just basically overhauling things that are just in need of some care. It’s something my kids and I can do together. Hopefully they carry on a love of refinishing! Thanks for the great contest!
I love to buy old solid wood dressers and tables and refurbish them. Every room has at least one of these treasures.
I look for sales on new furniture.
We have been married for 10yrs and we have never bought new. All of our furniture comes from various sources: FreeCycle, Relatives, Friends, Thrift Stores. We got a 6 month old Bunk Bed set from FreeCycle. Our front room sectional was given to us by a neighbor moving out of the building we live in.
My best source for saving on Furniture are Hotel Liquidator stores. These Liquidators are contacted by hotels when hotels are getting new furniture to come and pick up the furniture and then they take it back to their warehouses and sell it to the public. Most hotel switch furniture every 2 to 3 yrs, so the furniture is in excellent condition. The Liquidators sell the furniture for 25-75% off regular retail prices. I have been to a couple of the liquidators warehouses and the furniture is very inexpensive and in EXCELLENT condition.
You can buy bedroom sets for about $300 that includes the headboard, mattresses, frames, armoires and more. Large chairs and ottomans for about $75 the set. Lamps for about $10-15.
If you are need of some nice, but inexpensive furniture check to see if there is a Hotel Furniture Liquidator in your area. Do a google search for Hotel Furniture Liquidator, (your city) or check the yellow pages.
With 3 young boys, I forsee us not buying new for many many years to come!
