How Thrifty Are You Going to Be Poll

So, that poll on the sidebar was looking a little tired. A little bored with life at Simply Thrifty. We’re letting it retire and bringing you a new poll with new questions!
For some reason everything seems more exciting than it actually is today. Maybe because I pulled down boxes of decorations and have been doing my before Christmas deep clean? Hence the exclamation point use in a new poll announcement. Anyway, on with the poll:

Your post reminds of what we started doing about two years ago. We sat the kids down (they were 5 and 9 at the time) and discussed birthdays and Christmas. We asked them what they would be more happy with – a couple of really nice and more expensive gifts or a whole bunch of littler, less expensive stuff. They both said they would like to get one or two nice things. We’ve gone with this ever since. My daughter’s birthday was the first celebration on which we tried this out. Her first reaction was, “Is this all I get?” Then we reminded her of what we talked about and when she opened her nice gift she was really happy. My son followed suit and the holidays/birthdays have been so much easier since. There are few things to shop for, wrap up and deal with later around the house. What they do wind up receiving are things that actually get used over and over again, so there is no waste – example – ipod, basketball hoop, wii. What I really like, is that I don’t have to run around “looking” for things to buy them. They express a couple of ideas and we go with that and everyone is happy with the simplicity. Saves money in the end as it is something they really want.
