Live Traffic Feeds

March 21, 2008 by Karen Weideman

This doesn’t really have anything to do with being thrifty.  Consider it food for thought.

I’ve seen several blogs out there lately that have a box in the corner labeled Live traffic feed that tells incoming visitors’ blog names as well as the location of the blogger.  This may seem really cool to see all the places in the world where bloggers are coming from, but please know that most bloggers I know do not give their exact location to others.

By having a live traffic feed on your blog, you are revealing someone’s personal information without asking them.

Please think about this and how this may affect traffic to your blog.  Some bloggers may not visit your site if they know that their location will be revealed.

Anyway, I’m not trying to step on any toes.  Just food for thought.   ;)

I have a Feedjit live traffic feed. This gadget gives your nation’s flag, the city and state of the person, and wherever they linked from. It gives no info about who they are, and I’ve been told by friends (and have experienced myself) that often it gets the general local of the person, but not their true city.

I wouldn’t have this gadget on my computer if it told the person’s name. That’s scary and dangerous.

Thank you for brining this up so others may ponder it. :)

    Have a lovely Thanksgiving. :)

Miss Carey: When I visit someone’s blog with a traffic feed, it says ________, NC and it gives my exact city. If I click on their site from a link they left on Thrifty Mommy, then it also says that I came to their site from Thrifty Mommy. And then if I comment at their site, then it gives all that information.

You’re right. It is scary and dangerous. I do not give my exact location when blogging. I say western NC, eastern NC, etc.

Thanks for stopping by Thrifty Mommy and joining in the conversation. I hope you’ll stay a while. We have a lot of good info in the archives. :)
