Memorial Day Weekend Fun

Pooh's Hundred Acre Picnic

I guess it’s no secret there’s no money in the budget for vacations this year what with installing a new fence and hopefully replacing our windows with more energy efficient models. Since my son has off from school on Friday and Monday, I’m trying to find some fun things for us to do for the long weekend - preferably things I don’t have to pay for.

It’s supposed to be in the 80’s this weekend so of course we’ll hook up the sprinkler and make our water slide using the hose and our play set. I also just read that our township is having a parade and picnic on Saturday. That will be fun for the day - there will be music and entertainment and I think even fireworks.

On Sunday if it’s hot we may go to the local reservoir. It’s actually a state park, but the entry fee is fairly inexpensive for our carload and even if the water is too cold for swimming, we can still build sand castles and maybe even have a nice hike and picnic. These are the types of things my family did together when we were growing up because we didn’t have a lot of money to spend on frivolities and we always had a great time. My son is learning to appreciate these things as well.

I think we’ll probably do some barbecuing as well. My husband loves nothing more than to make dinner on the back deck using his smoker and barbecue grill. We light the torches, sit out at our deck table and relax, eat and enjoy the evening. It really doesn’t get much better than that.

What fun, frugal things will you be doing to enjoy your holiday weekend?

Parade! Our town tried to cancel the parade for lack of interest. Lack of interest was due to the high cost of entering. Once that was lowered, it seemed there were a lot of people interested in participating. Anyway - we are also having a family picnic and going to another one w/friends from the church worship team. Sounds like we might luck out and have good weather too!
