On Buying the Perfect Birthday Gift…Or at Least Something that Isn’t Lame

So my mom’s birthday is coming up. I love my mom, but I don’t always know what to buy her as gifts. She’s not a difficult person, but at her age she pretty much has everything she needs. She doesn’t approve of gift cards or money as they’re not personal enough, so that’s out of the question. She loves movies, but I’ve given her DVDs every year for the past few years, I’d like to do something different.
I am making dinner for Mom on Saturday one of her dear friends is coming and also my nephew, which should make a nice little dinner party. I’m wondering if a basket full of her favorite baked goods isn’t lame? The reason I say that is because while my mom loves baked goods, she also takes great pains with her appearance and prides herself on her slim figure.
Still, I think gifts from the heart, even if hardly if anything is spent, are the best gifts ever.
What do you think?

What about a basket of healthy baked goods, or baked goods made with organic and fresh ingredients? That would probably appeal to her love of baked goods and of her slim figure…
I don’t think it is lame at all. I agree with Kelby, make it with healthier options
Include some aluminum foil and ziplocks so she can FREEZE half the basket to enjoy in the coming months. Many baked goods freeze well. My grandmother used to keep brownies in the freezer, stored so that just a few could be taken out and thawed – and that was before microwaves!
I’m just sitting here counting my blessings that my mom likes gift cards.
I hope you all have a nice time together.
What about giving her a membership to Netflix for a year or something like that? Then she can watch all the movies she wants. Or take her on a movie date with you, complete with popcorn, soda and candies she remembers from her childhood?
So, you make them low calorie and add some of her favorite other treats too – like nuts or teas?
I agree that gifts from the heart are the best…although I tend to agonize over them just as you are doing. Is there something your mom could use your help with? My mom lives alone, so I know sometimes what she wants most is an extra pair of hands for a job or just someone to lighten a load here and there. To me, those can sometimes be the best gifts…finally getting that project done that you’ve been waiting for! Just a thought.
